I get the impression that LOST is heavily inspired by Michael Crichton novels.

the island, the atmosphere: Jurassic Park
visions, apparitions: Sphere
plane crashes: Airframe
possible scientific explanations of mysteries on the islands, ie. invisible island, invisible Jacob, everyone's body being found and accounted for back in civilization: Timeline

Discuss.
 
The creators said it was inspired by Stephen Kings The Stand.

Which I can somewhat see.

Also 28 Days later has some aspects of it that seem similar to The Stand.
