Lost my Rx meds, now what?

Ok, so I just got a 90-day prescription from the doc last week and I lost my meds while on vacation. Do I get a new Rx from the doc or call insurance? Am,i going to have to pay full pricr now? Its expensive

Most likely have to pay full price since insurance won't cover a refill so soon, but you never know.

Will most likely need a new RX as well, but that depends on what type of drug and the RX.

If you filled your rx from a national chain (e.g. Walgreens), then you can get a refill from any Walgreens. The pharmacist can usually tell you if there'll be an issue with insurance or not. If you cannot get a refill, then you'll need to call your MD and ask him to call in a new script to a local pharmacy where you're vacationing. I had to do that recently when I needed more Nasonex.

If its a controlled prescription you are SOL. If not the doc can call in a prescription wherever you are, but you are going to have to pay out of pocket. Sorry.

If he was prescribed pills then he should have taken some out and left them at home. It's actually illegal to be in possession of Rx pills without the original container.

That's why I don't understand people who throw out the bottles to their medications as soon as they finish it. If you keep them, at least you can transfer some of the pills out into one of the bottles if you ever need to travel, and they'll still be labeled correctly if anyone questions it (doubly so if you're traveling internationally).

It`s pay full price or back to Arkham asylum for yaz!!!

If your meds are psychiatric in nature your doctor should have samples he can hook you up with!

Yep. I always keep the most recent pill bottle and trash the old one. That way, if I need to travel, I always have enough of my prescription(s) with me without having to take the entire amount. (for a week trip, I usually bring 10 days worth, just in case something changes)

As for the OP's dilemma, it will depend on what the prescription med is, and on his doctor. If it's not something like oxycontin or one of the other widely abused drugs, it should be a simple thing to get refilled...and probably at his expense.

heh. took a 3 day vacation and packed all my meds. its not controlled substance or anything...just blood pressure meds. i shall call the doctor and ask for a 6 month supply now, just in cases

Just ask for another refill. The MD wont care. Check w/ insurance about refill costs.

Your probably going to die. With obama care, a board will review your case and decide if your life is worth the cost of the meds.

Be sure to include me in your will.

You can get by without paying for the medication out of pocket IF you can convince your doctor to change the prescription in some way i.e. alternate medication, increase in dosage, increase in times taken per day, etc. even if it is a controlled substance. It could be as simple as rather than taking one 500mg tab twice a day to one 250mg tab four times a day.

Depending on the med, your insurance may not cover any additional supply for the next XX number of days. I'd probably call the doc first to see if he can write a similar-but-new script, or using an acceptable alternative med to get you by. Second would be the pharmacy if they have any suggestions or tricks. Last would be the insurance. Maybe they can temporarily waive the supply restriction for your account.

And yeah, as mentioned, in the future bring only as much medication as needed by your days on vacation, plus a small buffer....not your entire 90-day supply.
