while i support her right do drink beer and f*** up her unborn child, it's his right to refuse service.

Wrong zippy. A vendor has no legal discretion to discriminate against an entire class of people who have a legal right to drink. He was selling beer in a public place and he had absolutely no right to change the laws on his own nanny-state whims. You think he'd get away with refusing to serve beer to all women? How about refusing to serve blacks? How about if he refused to serve anyone over the age of 60 because they're weaker than normal people and can't handle it? If you believe OP has a right to pick and choose who gets beer and who doesn't you're as stupid as he is.

it sucks you were fired but your boss must be an idiot. I see nothing wrong with what you did. Just curious, what if a rowdy, obviously drunk man/woman wanted another beer, is there a policy against selling to them?

In MOST states, there are laws that prohibits selling alcohol to obviously drunk people...

And you're retarded for thinking that someone should have the choice to refuse to sell a legal product to a person legally allowed to purchase said product.

Wait, what? I'm pretty sure business are allowed to refuse service as long as it isn't discrimination of a protected class. Granted, the OP is an employee and not the owner.

Really, I don't see why everybody is getting so worked up over this. OP made a decision based on what he was comfortable. The woman complained to the manager, who sided with her and fired the employee.

Would people be up in arms if the manager agreed with OP and still refused to sell the lady the beer? It's not like the government has made it illegal to sell alcohol to pregnant women (have they?).

But he does. He has authority over what he chooses to do. It may not be a right recognized by his employer, but has the right to refuse to do what he believes is morally wrong. What the OP described seems like a legitimate thing to be concerned about.

He lost his job, but they can do that if they want to too.

What he said.

Wikipedia - Protected Class
I don't see pregnant women on there. I don't understand why people are bring politics into this, everything that happened here was within a private business. An employee made a choice that management disagreed with and he was fired for it. What's the big deal?

We are talking about one person who is free to ask for a beer vs. another who is just as free to decline the sale.

He wasn't free to decline, which he found out, or this entire thread never would have happened.

He was constrained by the rules of his job not to decide on his own, besides minors, who could and couldn't buy a beer.

Saying he was "free to decline" is like saying you're "free" to murder the next 10 strangers you meet. It's a meaningless statement which ignores the consequences.

Ignore the consequences and then all of us are "free" to do anything and everything always, obliterating the entire concept of being free to do something as opposed to not being free to do something and making the statement "free to do x" completely and utterly meaningless.

Wow. What the hell is wrong with people saying he is in the wrong? Wow; very disturbing.

Good for you OP; I fully support your choice and it's sad that you would lose your job over something like that. Very sad and disturbing.

Then hell...he should also refuse to sell alcohol to anyone who looks Muslim or Mormon...since their laws forbid them to drink alcohol...

And throw pork at them!

Seriously though, that's a poor analogy. How about refuse to sell alcohol to anyone because they might drive drunk later.

You're the douchebag..... he wasn't trying to dictate how she lived her life, she was free to order it from another vendor. He didn't say "you cant' do that" he said " i don't feel comforatable selling to you"

while i support her right do drink beer and f*** up her unborn child, it's his right to refuse service.

🙄

I guess you'd also be defending a salesperson after they refused to sell a person something becasue they were black, arab, jewish, female, fat, etc.

Sure, it's his "right" to stand there and not to do his job, but it's also his employers right, and ultimately their duty, to fire him for not doing his job and discriminating against customers. By not firing him they are condoning his actions, which would result in a law suit after this or a future instance. A lawyer would have a field day with this by showing a "pattern of discrimination" to a jury.

Thanks for referring to me as stupid, really shows your maturity.

So...all you folks saying he did the right thing, you'd be 100% behind the government stepping up and passing a law to forbid alcohol sales to a pregnant woman? After all, if the vendor was right in refusing to sell to her, there ought to be a law about it so he couldn't be fired for it...right?

Yes, I would totally support such a law.

That's silly and you know it. The difference is, as someone already posted, that pregnant women are not a "protected class" and the intent between refusing to serve a specific type of good (alcohol) to pregnant women isn't even remotely close to not wanting to serve a <race> because you don't like them.

Protected groups are protected regarding employment, not purchasing items in stores. Nice try though.

OK OK, our OP stood on his principles be they right or wrong, as a result he lost his job.

So OP don't complain, you lost your job as a result. The only bottom line you can take to the bank.

If you want to take the support you got from other posters to the bank, that and two nickles will buy you a dime.

The only comment that is worth anything on this thread.

I wonder if the folks who support a law forbidding sales of alcohol to pregnant women are pro choice or, if they also believe women should not be able to have an abortion?

Wow, what the hell is wrong with you?

Go back to communist Canada 😡

I'm pro choice, but against pregnant women drinking. If you want to have a baby, have a healthy baby. Otherwise vacuum that lifeless fetus outta there and quit wasting everyone's time and resources.

Good for the OP. I would have done the same thing. Ignore the people saying you don't have a right to tell other people how to live. People should be stopped from making bad decisions whenever possible, through whatever means are necessary.

Applause for OP.

wow, I thought you were one of the many that have come down on me for being outspoken to those doing social wrongs.

Who the fuck are you to tell her how to live her life?

Mind your own business. You're what's wrong with the world, dickheads who want to get in everyone else's business.

"I don't like weed so it should be illegal."

That's the problem with this world. People think they can just go off and do their own thing without taking advice because "whoa now, no one is gonna tell me how to live" and then they screw up stuff for everyone from their stupid ******* decisions. Learn your place and rank in this world.
