Lost my beer vending job for not selling to a preggo.

I'm an accountant full time, and on the side I beer vend (vended) for the Cincinnati Reds. I'm the guy that goes up and down the aisles COLD BEER HERE!! etc etc....it's a great part time job. You work 3.5 hours max, make your own schedule, and average $150 in that time span. Anyway...

I was walking the concourse area today sweating my ass off, almost time to go home. An obvious preggo comes up to me...she's easily 7-8 months in, and wants to buy 2 Miller Lites. I have never encountered this situation before, and I kindly suggest to her that it's so hot out, perhaps she'd like a bottle Dasani or soda to quench her thirst. She insisted that she wanted the beer. I asked her if it was for someone else (husband etc), she got real defensive at this point and said..."No it's for me, why do you care?"

I responded with..."Well ma'am I don't feel comfortable selling a pregnant woman beer. I don't think it's right to drink while you're pregnant."

She then goes off on me in front of lots and lots of people, cursing etc. Her husband hears her and comes over to find out what the trouble is. She explains to him and he yells "I don't think it's any of your business what the fuck my wife drinks"...etc a few times. I try walking away and they follow me to my commissary (where I replenish) and my vending manager of course happens to be in there. They explain what happened to him and I continue to object to selling to them. I tell him that any of the other vendors are welcome to sell a pregnant woman beer if they want, but I"m not doing it. He apologizes to her and grabs beer from the cooler and gives it to her for free. I just stand there dumbfounded.

They leave and he asks me to cash out and come to his office. The HR girl is in there when I get there and they end up letting me go because I somehow caused a scene and the woman wasn't doing anything illegal.

Pretty pissed off. Been there almost 4 years and it's a great side job...I put all that money in savings for a house.

I still object to selling to her, but what say you ATOT?

TLDR:

I vend beer for the Reds
Preggo asks for 2 Miller Lites
I object
She goes batshit crazy
I get fired.

Update:
Meeting with vending manager on Thursday before the Paul McCartney concert...hoping I could possibly get my job back since he is agreeing to meet with me.

Good. It's not your job to regulate someone else's morals.

While I agree that she SHOULDN'T be drinking...it's still her choice.

That's happened to a bartender I've known. Should've just sold her the beer, one more stupid child won't hurt America.

not that it's worth it, but that's probably a pretty easy wrongful termination case to win.

maybe your boss can pick up a second job selling motorcycles to blind people.

fwiw her kid probably already has fetal alcohol syndrome anyway.

While I sympathize with your morals, OP, you were absolutely not in a position to deny her purchase.

You screwed up! end of story.

If you have moral scrupples regarding which legal adults should and shouldn't drink beer you shouldn't be a beer vendor.

Pretty stupid thing to lose a job over. Not illegal for her to buy alcohol or smokes, and there is no reason you should let her stupidity screw you out of a job.

Pick your fights dude.

good: everyone over 21 that's not pregnant
bad: preggos

that's not exactly 'moral scruples.' that's just not wanting another squishy-faced welfare-supported retard preemie in the world.

Honestly I never raised my voice or escalated the situation. I was fairly calm and polite the entire time. I didn't think this would cost me my job. Lesson learned I guess.

you did the ethical thing, but it was preggo bitch's choice to drink and her (un)ethical choice to make.

im sure stalin would crack a smile in his grave for you though.

What's next? Going to refuse to sell a double-quarter pounder with cheese to a fat person?

"Are you sure you wouldn't rather have a salad?"

I applaud your choice. Granted, had it been a job you NEEDED, that might've been a bad decision. But if the rest of those ruhtards involved are even thinking "Hmm, maybe he's onto something", you done good.

The government will fight to no end on abortion, but they won't take 5 minutes to help keep the babies who will actually be born safe. I think doing rec drugs that are known to screw up babies should be a crime if your pregnant.

I consider them to be totally different situations. In yours the purchaser is hurting only themselves, let them be. In mine, the purchaser is hurting another human being who can't defend themselves. Think up a better analogy to make your point.

But it's been proven that a beer or two doesn't hurt either the drinker or the fetus...
Was she already drunk? If so, that should have been your reason...if not...none of your fucking business.
