Lost internet access after installing SP on W2K machine

Greetings.

The title caption pretty much sums up my problem. I had to re-install W2K after a HD crash. After I got the machine up and running, I decided to update Windows w/ the most current service pack, SP4. All seemed to have gone well. After a re-boot, I tried to search for updates only to find that I can no longer connect to the Internet. I tried a few things to get the connection going again but only uninstalling SP4 worked. I thought maybe it's a problem with SP4 so I tried SP3, same problem - can't connect to the internet. Uninstalled SP3 and tried SP1, same thing.

Now, what can be going on? I had SP4 installed before the HD crash and I'd like to bring my machine back up to date. Is there a work around?

TIA

Did you look at the firewall settings? SP4 resets them.

Have you checked Event Log for any leads?

Can you PING your ISP?

Also, going backwards with Service Paks is never a good thing.
With what you did, a Fresh Install would seem to be the thing to do.

Cr@p, I was hoping not to have to do that. I didn't even think about checking the security settings or the event log. Not that I'd know what to look for anyway. I'll try SP4 again and check the security settings and the event log. What in particular, or where, should I look for?

Thanks.
