Don't worry, Abrams has a habit of wrapping things up, only to start new cliffhangers. Just watch Alias and you'll know what I mean.
About the extra guy and how he just popped in there... this show is mainly focused on a handful of characters. I was thinking it would've been better if the "extra" guy was one of them instead. Feels like Abrams didn't have this planned all along but just threw it in as a way out (since he ran out of leads). But if you think about it... if it were one of the main characters, the whole feel of the show wouldn't really be a mystery but rather... just a cheesy psycho-in-our-midst thriller.
Kinda like he had to do it this way. Someone mentioned he was in a previous episode, but I don't remember seeing him. I'm just wondering how Ethan and the other long inhabitants have shaved all this time.
