Lost Drive E: after Fdisk???

Got a new machine I am trying to set up. ECS K7AMA board , WD40 gig drive. I fdisk the drive into three parts, 8,31 and 1G. When I reboot and try to format it says there is no E: drive. When I then go back to fdisk to check it, say yes to LBA it says it can't read the drive. If I do a low level I can partition again but the same thing happens. Wondering it something is screwed with the board or bios.
Was thinkng of putting it in my ASUS box and try again, but thought I would try asking first.
Didn't realize the board was a PC CHIPS till I did a AMI bios check. Never had any luck with them.
