I had to reinstall my OS recently and tried playing BF1942 off of an archive HDD but it tells me I need the CD key. I can't seem to find the CD anywhere and was wondering if you guys might now if its cached somewhere in one of the files in the EA folder and what file it might be.

Thanks.

FWIW, I have the CDs but I just can't find the original case which had the game key.

It is probably stored in the registry. Take a look around in there

I keep all of my cdkeys on a piece of paper and also on my hard drive in an excel spreadsheet because I always lose the book/case etc

Go to Start/Run. Use regedit command

Browse down to ergc. There may be other EA games there as well.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SOFTWARE
Electronic Arts
EA GAMES
Battlefield 1942
ergc
Battlefield 1942 Road To Rome
ergc

In the right side pane there should be a value stored there called (default). Double click on it and your cd-key will be listed under value data.

Thanks for the tips

Unfortunately, I had to do a clean install of the OS because it had gotten corrupted so the registry in XP is brand new. Would the key be in any of the files within the main BF1942 program directory though?

Doubtful. There is an algorithm to check the veracity of the CD-Key but not the CD key itself.

Call EA, from what I hear they are pretty good about giving replacement keys.

Might have to fax or email proof of media though.

Thanks Bulldog13.

Its stinks in that I can find my BF1942 RTR case but can't seem to locate my original one which is more important.

Oh well, from now on I'm going to have to put those keys in my PDA or something.

Yeah your cd-key isn't on the actual CD's. All installation disks are the same. It you install you have to supply any valid cd-key which will work. If you installed it though the exact key you entered is in the registery.

Cool. Didn't know that one, it does work as I compared the serial # it gave me to the one on my jewel case.
