My 8800GTS 512 is about to crap out it looks like. Woke up this morning to my screen being completely fuzzy. v-card appears in the device manager but windows says it has stopped it because the card is reporting problems.

Can anyone recommend a similar performing card or something a little bit better? ballpark range on how much i want to spend is about $150-$250. i've been out of touch on the latest videocard news. I'm not a heavy gamer, mostly play WoW/SC2/Badcompany2 at a resolution of 1680x1050.

cpu is a core duo 2 @ 3.2ghz, if that helps.

thanks in advance.

gtx 460 768mb since your not a heavy gamer is the perfect choice.
Roughly 2x the speed of your 8800gts 512 for under 200$.

every card in your price range will handily do what your asking. Look at features and decide what suites you most.

Me i'd wait a month. ATI is gonna have a price drop to piss off nvidia and the 5870 may well drop that far.

Ah his card is broke. So your saying he should wait for ATI with no computer?

have you tried baking the 8800gts yet? there are some good deals out there now, but as mentioned prices should go down pretty soon.

ahhh maybe a reseat and cleaning might help. Sounds like overtemp to me. Could be dry heatsink grease.

Also alot of MB's have onboard video. I am saying wiat a week or 2 and see where prices go. could be alot of good hardware cheap. IF ATI drops prices enough nvidia may follow.

its going to be a interesting christmas season for upgrades !

Clean the HS, reapply thermal compound, and see if it fixes it. It's probably just dirty and/or the compound has dried out.

DOn't bother baking it. It usually doesn't work. If you're willing to spend $250 then get a GTX 460 1GB. You get 8 more ROPS a 256-bit GDDDR interface and overclocks like a madman. This is what I got after 1 of my 88000GTs died. Get an eVGA or MSI and use MSI Afterburner to overclock it.

where'd u read about the 5xxx price drops? amd explicitly stated they're NOT doing any price drops despite the 460 gtx release.

Ahhh looking at the nvidia surge. Its comming and soon. They need to clear inventory for the new parts comming late this year.

Its comming. This week or next. but your ass on it. Might not be a huge drop but could be enough to move the upper mid range stuff down to nvidia prices.

Price on the HD 5800 series & 5770s have been slowly but steadily dropping for roughly two weeks now. So by next Thursday we should all see even lower prices at Newegg. If the HD 5850 dipps as low or lower than $250 then Nvidia is in real trouble now.

depending on how much are you are willing to spend for a card, then decide after...
