I do computer jobs on the side and a realty company I did work for last week gave me a check and I lost it.

Is it inappropriate to ask them for another since it was my fault? I doubt they would think I'm trying to cash both since I have done a lot of work for them, but I'm not sure if this is done a lot or if companies just take the loss if they lose the check?

It wasn't too much money, but still enough to make me not happy in losing it.

Just tell them you misplaced it, ask them to put a stop payment on the old check and issue a new check to you. Money is money.

If you're really afraid of telling them you lost it, say that it was in a deposit bag that was stolen from your car or something, and apologize for the inconvenience. Or just tell the truth, either way they owe you money.

word. Also, keep in mind they do balance their checkbook and will notice if you simply haven't cashed it. That won't look very responsible and may influence their decision to hire you again.

If they have any kind of accounting department at all, they will eventually notice the check never got cashed and either automatically issue you a new one or call you and ask why you never cashed it if they are honest. If they are not honest, you will never see your money or hear about it again. Calling them and letting them know the check was lost and that they should stop payment on it and issue you a new one is the right thing to do. They shouldn't give you any grief about cutting you a new check.

its an inconvenience for them, but not really any danger if they put stop payment on the old one

Since you lost the check..... just steal sh!t from the company to make up what they owe you. Even trade....

JUST KIDDING! Ask them for a replacement check. If they tell you they dont do that, then go with the above :)
