maybe the whole thing is a flashback. remember in Desmond's "dream sequence" when he was talking with this professor friend at the pub...he said he doesnt remember everything...just bits and pieces of an event he's been thru before. then when he was talking with charlie toward the end, he said he's been remembering bits and pieces ever since he turned the key. thats how he could foresee Locke's speech/the lightning/Charlie drowning. So maybe Desmond has been thru the whole island bit before and now remembering the big bits and pieces as he flashes back.

IMO, the whole point of Desmond's flashback yesterday was to make him realize that no matter what he does, he cant change the final outcome of things

How is this possible? If he lived through the "whole island bit" before, then that would mean that he went back in time AFTER it was all over. From what I understand, this is how things worked:

Turn key - back in time - relived 3 years ago - knocked out - put back on island by someone, AFTER the key was turned.

If that is the case, the infinite loop would be 3 years ago until the time he turns the key. So how could he already have seen Charlie dying or a speech being made?

I'm still going to say that they are all already dead - and the island is simply purgatory. When they make peace with themselves, or they right the wrongs of their past, they move on or "leave" the island, and go to "heaven." The whole Desmond ordeal is just that he was given a 2nd chance and still failed - and the cricket bat to the head killed him again, putting him back on the island.

I am 99% wrong, I am sure. Whatever. Good show.

Desmond mentioned that his life flashed before his eyes when he turned the key, but it didn't stop after he woke up. I don't know if it will end up being significant but he did tell his friend about the island and everything the second time around. Maybe that's how she knows to look for him.

No, purgatory doesn't really work. Michael didn't exactly earn his way off the island by doing good deeds and they have alluded to time going on normally in the outside world; the people who found the EM pulse at the end of season 2, Red Sox winning the world series, etc.

Yup. I think it was all mental... he probably broke down so much on the island that in his state of unconsiousness he convinced himself that he was meant to be there to make himself feel better.

I hate throwing ideas out there because rarely is anyone right, but I think that he mistaking Charlie for someone else. If Charlie was on the street corner playing guitar and had that much of a conversation with Desmond... he'd have to remember SOMETHING about it. So I think that Desmond's mind just put Charlie in someone's else's spot when his life flashed before his eyes. Saving Charlie's life is just a repressed memory of someone close to him dying and the predictions are just strokes of luck.

Ok, back to basics. That was a GREAT episode. I can't believe how interesting every character but effing Kate and Sawyer are. The show is (was?) suffering from the same thing plaguing Battlestar Galatica (no one cares about Apollo and 'Buck).

These the whole show is a flashback theories remind me of the matrix within a matrix theories that people had after the 2nd movie.

This was a good ep!

The whole "Desmond being told what's going on by an old lady" thing bore too much of a resemblance to Neo and the Oracle. I noted that last night, but people sorta shruged it off.

Question:
How does he remember things happening in the future (as in after turning the key)?

When he turns the key, does his WHOLE life flash before his eyes (even after the point of him turning the key, which is circular and dependent)?

Here's something that just ran through my pea sized brain :p
Desmond seemed to knew where this key was; and as soon as the $hit hit the fan, he proceeded to get it and turn the key.. Before he went down the portal to the "key turning spot", didn't he say to Locke, "See you in another life..".. something along those lines...meaning.. back in time he goes..

Its weird.. this Desmond episode really didn't answer much.. but it definately opened up potential for the the fact I can't fvcking wait until next week! :p

One other thing. I think it's significant that as soon as he basically said, "I CAN change things", he got knocked out. So, I think he was manipulated to go back to the island by that lady, but there is something that needs to be changed. IDK, maybe Charlie has to do one more thing before he dies. Although, I wouldn't be surprised if Desmond ends up permanently changing time so that Charlie does not die.

It's true the episode didn't show a whole lot we didn't know from vague references (how he got on the island, he can see the future, his former gf still loves him and is rich), but it's better than the fake drama they are creating on the side island with Jack, Kate, and Sawyer.

Looks like you're not the only one who thinks this way (if ratings are a measure).

Yeah, I really like this show, but they deserve a kick in the ass. All the bullsh!t repeats, episodes that go no where, and not answering tons of questions gets real old. The preview for next week says "three huge secrets revealed", which will end up being: the color of water on the island is blue, the color of the palm trees are green, and there is a boat load of sand on the island. I would love to see the show end after 1 more season so they can start wrapping up the answers.

Man was it just me or did you want to just kick the sha$t out of the Father of Desmond's GF. "You are not even worthy of a drink of my wisky!" Man oh man did that just really piss me off. I wanted to kill that guy myself.

Considering it was Valentines day I wouldn't think anything of it.

This just in...most recent episode of lost has highest tivo/dvr/taped percentage of any episode yet!

Yeah...I'd blame Valentine's Day on the "low" ratings
