loss of keyboard/mouse input control

Hi guys, I'm getting a little desperate trying to figure this out. Posted my issue in a few different places, but still no luck. it's been a few months, and was wondering if anyone ever experienced something similar. I'll just copy-paste my presentation of the problem and add my specs, which i tend to believe wont help much, at the end:

On, what appear to me as random occasions, i lose control of my mouse and keyboard. I've only had this happen after there was no input from the mouse or the keyboard for about a minute or more. never during actual usage, mid work. the only thing the keyboard seems responsive to, is the CTRL^ALT^DEL command. which takes me to the... well...the ctrl^alt^del screen. once there, my mouse and keyboard regain functionality. as soon as i leave it though, by trying to go to task_manager or choosing to reboot, shutdown, change_user, i lose all control again(save for going back by pressing CTRL^ALT^DEL). if i chose to shut down/reboot the pc, and it can not reboot without force_shutting_down a running program (which is always the case), i become stuck. CTRL^ALT^DEL no longer functions and i have no method of input. During these lockups, everything continues to work fine in the background, i just can't interact with whatever is going on on the screen, and eventually have to force restart my pc.

As to how often this happens, well, i've had it happen 3 times in the span of about 15 minutes, and i think i've had a whole week go by without the issue popping up. sometimes i can go afk for 15 minutes and it will still be fine when i return, other times, i think that not even a minute goes by, with no input from the mouse and/or keyboard and it's enough for it to friendzone me.

Tried running a couple of anti-malware checks, antivirus checks, and googling for solutions. What makes this more troublesome is that it happens on my work pc(same setup as my home pc, i just switch drives). a complete reinstall of the os would be an ok solution if it were my home pc. it's a much more laborious proposition, doing this for my work pc. would basically take up two whole days, and i'd have no guarantee the problem wont come back after.

last time it happened i not only lost work but also, lost some of the profiles stored locally for my logitech g600 mouse. by that i mean that some of the "apps" i set the mouse to recognize and apply my macros to on the spot, disappeared from the list of apps the mouse is set to recognize. probably nothing to do with it though, just the rough reboot. but still.

ps. also tried different keyboard, mouse, reinstalling mouse/keyboard. same thing. anyway. same troublesome keyboard/mouse combo works fine on my home pc.

This probably won't help, but anyway,
General specs:
MB: gigabyte H61M-DS2
OS: Windows 7 Professional 64
CPU: Intel G2020
RAM: 8 GB Corsair Vengeance Kit 2x4
GPU: Intel HD Graphics
storage(work): 126 GB Samsung 850 PRO + some random old laptop HDD ~160 GB/5400 RPM
storage(home): 2tb st2000dm001 (same OS used, no issues)
Logitech G600 mouse; random illuminated keyboard.

i have hibernate, sleep, restore etc turned off; i use classic shell;

again, i use the same setup for home and work, except for the different storage units/hdd, between which i switch back and forth. this only ever happens on my work pc(ssd+160 hdd 5400 rpm). nothing else is different, save the hdd and OS copy(both win7 x64). same keyboard and mouse are used in both settings.

Any ideas or hints would be appreciated.

First thing I would do is unplug/disconnect "some random old laptop HDD ~160 GB" and see how it works without it.

If it still does it with just the SSD, then I'd turn off Hardware prefetch in bios and try it. Maybe change sata ports too..

Good suggestions by Burpo. Also if you are using Logitech software for extra mouse functionality, disable it for the time being.

hm. ok. removed the hdd, unfortunately that didn't seem to prevent it from happening. changed back and forth between sata ports. also, i stubbornly left my home setup run(different hdd as i mentioned) for a long enough time, until guess what? yup. happened there as well. regardless of the sata ports used. first time ever. i've had this issue for months now but it never happened on my home setup. didn't spent too much time looking for the prefetch thing in bios since it now happened on my home setup as well.

now. to be honest i strongly liked the logitech software for it. didn't put it in the post so as not to create bias. the issue started appearing about a month after i switched the work setup to ssd, and about the time i got the logitech mouse and a new keyboard.

also, as a side note, on my home setup (where a certain work related software isn't running), when this happens, if from the ctrl^alt^del screen i chose log_off, i can then log back in and everything fixes itself. i can't use the log_off option on my work setup since there's a software running which the OS can't automatically stop apparently, system basically hangs, and that's when i get stuck. i'm outside of the ctrl^alt^del screen so can't input anything, also ctrl^alt^del won't work anymore, and my only solution is a hard reboot.

what i haven't tried yet is testing to see if i can switch my mouse sens once it locks me out again, and after i get to the ctrl^alt^del screen. i have a button set to toggle it between 200 and 400. i want to see if the mouse is in any way responsive other than left/right clicks and basic movement once in the ctrl^alt^del screen. still, sens doesn't change when this occurs, it's the one i set from the logitech sofware. so it's not resetting to the sens i have if closing down logitech_gaming_software. however, once out of the ctrl^alt^del screen, i basically have 0 dpi sens :) the confusing part is why is the keyboard in on it? it's not a logitech keyboard. anyway, next time it happens, i will test if sens can still be changed at the ctrl^alt^del screen with a dedicated button. if the mouse is responsive, i might try a button macro/bat file/task combination to close out of the logitech gaming software and restart it.... i dunno...

looked into event viewer but not sure what i should be searching for. nothing much reported there.

twice this week, on my work setup, i got up from the pc for less than a minute, by the time i returned to my chair, the mouse/keyboard were unresponsive.

reason i didn't try replacing the mouse or turning off the software is that i kinda want the logitech thing. it's the reason i got the laser sensor g600, and not a high precision optical mouse. i need all the buttons i can get. 12 still not enough without the g_shift believe it or not. have dozens and dozens of macros for all the software that i need to use. while i could do without some, other commands are a pain if i can't macro them.

thanks for the help. i will report back if somehow i stumble upon an explication and/or solution.

in case you can think of other stuff i could try, please let me know. i'm running out of brain cells. however, i'm now pretty certain it's the logitech software.
