I was wondering if anyone here has been targeted by the Bush gov't? I know the Patriot Act is a big thing.
Who here has a personal story to tell?

I was pulled over once at the airport for having explosive making chemicals on my possessions.

A hick cop pulled over my pregnant wife, asked her if she had "any explosives or contraband in the car." (true story)

Oh, nevermind, that was under the Clinton Admin ;)

The boyfriend is an owner operator ...owns a Peterbuilt... and delivers fuel for a local company for the past 15+ years. Never had a problem before, but now...

whenever he goes near an airport, they are no longer allowed to wait inside the gates... they now line up on the roads and wait their turn.

When he goes to the main plants, he must show driver's license, registration and insurance. There was a rumor (nothing more than a rumor) that all drivers might be required to get a 'special' picture identification, after a backgroung check.

He gets stopped at least least twice a week by unmarked troopers, who question him in detail.

His loading cards are only valid for each delivery and then must be reactivated.

He is no longer allowed to travel over certain bridges, thru certain tunnles or use certain highways anymore.

He is a pollack!! He says that from what he is hearing from the other drivers... certain ethnic backgrounds are being given a lot harder time.

:)

My daughter got harrassed and felt up by an airport security officer making sure she wasn't a terrorist, and there wasn't a damn thing I could do about it.

She was 14 years old at the time.

It might be a good idea to not allow fuel tankers to drive where ever they want to. I'll bet I can't take my Glock 21 into my bank either.
He hasn't been singled out, has he? All the other drivers follow the same rules?

I am a Slovak...dark hair, dark eyes, dark skin ( darker than my Mexican wife )

Isla, I was stopped for a drivers license check 200 feet from my driveway. It was a roadblock and they stopped everyone.
I don't fly, so forgive me if I'm incorrect, they randomly harrass people at will to be politically correct.

FOLKS: I want to know if you're Muslim, African American or whatever and a bunch of police have halled you to jail for doing nothing.

I don't think they needed to poke her about the breasts.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to be with her at the time. She was flying down to see her paternal grandparents and we were separated at a certain point for security reasons.

I didn't find out about it until after she came back home.

I would call that an abuse, pure and simple.

Isla, I am sorry for the moron guards at an airport.

Let me say this again in another way:

I don't care about the Patriot Act ! I hear EVERYDAY how we're losing our freedoms under BUSH !
Post some examples like the Japanese Americans were put into internment camps during WWII, Reichsmordwoche, Kristallnacht, the purges under Stalin, or the Cultural Revolution in China.

But but but we're not as bad as China under Mao yet....

The US has a much stronger tradition of freedoms than Russia, China, Germany (esp. pre WWII), etc. Even with abberations such as slaughter of the Indians and internment of Japanese Americans. So therefore a ruckus is raised whenever anything even slightly infringes on freedoms. And I feel thats the way it should be so we never even approach the oppressiveness of the regimes which our founding fathers wished to distinguish ourselves from.

the FBI came to us and made sure were on "the us's side" and allegience wasn't to saddam~ but this is 2nd hand from my dad since apparantly my parents made sure we weren't around at all. I also know a few people were taken in for a while but i never heard more than that because everone is hush about it--- arabs are some of the most easily frightened people I've met~ most feel like the government is working against th?? so a lot think that by staying low the gov will leave them alone

also, one of my friends was pulled in the airport for like 6 hours to be questioned because he was I.D.ed as a known terrorist. When the FBI finally arrived they walked in and saw him (he looks totally white cause he is 1/2 white) and his brother in law. His brother in law looks arab and he was sitting there playing soliatre on his laptop and they walked up to him and said "are you XXXX". And he said, "nope- that is my brother in law" and pointed to my friend and then he said the FBI started to shake their heads. They did get get a free trip to D.C. as a "sorry" :D

The patriot act pulled together many existing laws and added clauses regarding commerce, otherwise there are no new laws.

That's completely inaccurate. You really ought not make categorical assertions about issues you have no knowledge of.

The Patriot Act amended the following laws:

Wiretap Statute (Title III)
Electronic Communications Privacy Act
Computer Fraud and Abuse Act
Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act
Family Education Rights and Privacy Act
Pen Register and Trap and Trace Statute
Money Laundering Act
Immigration and Nationality Act
Money Laundering Control Act
Bank Secrecy Act
Right to Financial Privacy Act
Fair Credit Reporting Act

It also, as you mentioned, has fiscal-law components, including broadening the ability to use expedited contracting mechanisms to make government purchases to support the war effort.

There is some analysis of the impact of the Patriot Act here.

I have one. There's actually a presidential candidate who doesn't understand the first ammendment right to free speech. He wants to ban a book. Can you believe that?

Yeah, Kerry should just sue them for libel considering it's filled with lies from people who've been proven to be liars.

How's this for losing freedom?

Graphic Designer Fired After Heckling Bush
http://apnews.myway.com/article/20040821/D84JR9SO0.html
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (AP) - A man who heckled President Bush at a political rally was fired from his job at an advertising and design company. The graphic designer said he was told he'd embarrassed and offended a client who provided tickets to the event.

"I was told that my actions reflected badly on the company and that a client was upset," Glen Hiller of Berkeley Springs said.

Hiller was escorted from Hedgesville High School on Tuesday after shouting comments about the Iraq war and the failure to find weapons of mass destruction there. The crowd had easily drowned out Hiller with its chant: "Four more years."

Arriving at his job with Octavo Designs in Frederick, Md., the next morning, Hiller said he was "shocked" to learn he was fired. A woman at the company who declined to give her name confirmed Hiller was axed because of his conduct at the rally.

"They see my actions as negative," Hiller said, adding he'd do the same thing again. "There is no venue for the regular guy to ask a question. We don't have access to people in power. And those events are completely scripted and controlled."

Last month, Charleston City Council apologized to two protesters arrested for wearing anti-Bush T-shirts to the president's July 4 rally. The pair were taken from the event in restraints after revealing T-shirts with Bush's name crossed out on the front and the words "Love America, Hate Bush" on the back. Trespassing charges were ultimately dismissed.

Sheezh, I'm an old white guy. The police just look at me laugh and say "go on grandpa". One of the few perks of being old is that everyone thinks you're harmless. Er, uh, well, they would be right about that unfortunately.... :)
