losing my internet conection

My computer will lose its internet connection randomly (from 5 minutes to a whole day) and the only way for me to get back online is to restart my computer. Connecting with a Cable connection. Running Windows 2000 with ICS enabled. Zone Alarm Pro with security set at high. My Rig
So, what can I do to fix this problem?

Thanks!

With cable there is this 'heartbeat' where your ISP pings you to see if you are still online or not, every few minutes or so. With your ZAP secruity set to high, it will NOt be able to ping you therefore thinks you have disconnected, eventually disconnecting you.

Try set your ZAP to allow ping from certain IP (from your ISP).

There is also issues wtih port forwarding, but see if this helps first.

Where do I change those specific settings?
I had ZAP set at medium for a while but I would still lose my connection from time to time.

What is probably happening is your lease is expiring on your ip, windows attempts to renew and it ZAP blocks dhcp. Just a hunch

ok
I shutdown ZAP overnight and all of the file transfers in G6 FTP Server are still running. Now what?

Off to school...

Well this just proved your firewall is being the pain in the arse.

Just wait til I find out the fix for you, as I dont have this 'heartbeat' on ADSL.

To get around this, simply configure your firewall to allow the IP address that gets blocked just prior to your timeouts.

If you use Zonealarm (which is free for personal use), go to security > advanced > open ¡§add Host/Site¡¨ and put ¡§heartbeat¡¨ as the description and "[THAT IP/Site name]" as the Host/Site.

When you click "next" it will resolve to a numerical IP address and ask for confirmation. Click "Finish" and "apply" & "OK" and it is done
