Losing IP with Cable Modem???

Can anyone tell me why everytime my system sits idle for a while I need to either renew my IP or sometimes even reboot my machine? It's getting quite annoying.

BTW, I'm running WinXP and Motorola Surfboard 4100 on Cox Internet.

If you are using Zone Alarm try closing it when you lose your IP and then restart it after renewing. This same thing started happening to me out of the blue about 2 months ago, and the problem went away entirely after switching to Tiny Personal Firewall. If your arent using a firewall, then I have no idea- 🙂

If you leave your machine running all the time you could just Hardcode your IP (I get the impression that you do since it "sits idle for a while"). I imagine that their lease time for their IP's is plenty long enough.

I have ATTBI and their IP lease is 4 days, I have my IP/HC because I want it to always be the same, and it is unless I leave the machine off for a while and the lease expires during that time. Worse case all I have to do is set it to dchp, write down the IP and set it back. I have been running with this config for over a year and a half, I only had to change my IP once when @home went belly up and ATTBI took over.
