Losing internet connection when cable is unplugged and plugged back in

Hi,

I recently bought an Asus S400 laptop with Windows 8 (now upgraded to 8.1).

I have Uverse internet and connect directly to the router with ethernet cable. My Uverse wifi is turned off.

The problem I have is if I unplug the network cable and plug it back in (or just plug the cable in after a restart) I have no connectivity.

If I reboot the computer with the cable plugged in, I have internet access again and it works great.

I can turn my wifi on an off (using my Linksys router connected to Uverse gateway) and the computer connects to the internet every time with no problem, but I prefer to use the network cable and keep wifi turned off.

I have the latest version of the driver for my network card.

I have gone in to my network settings and have "IPS Address" and "DNS Server" set to connect automatically.

I also lose internet connection if I simply close the laptop lid without unplugging the cable. Under power options, for battery and power mode, I have the option set to "do nothing" when the lid closes.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Please let me know if you need any other information.

Jeff

Make sure the DNS Client Service is running and is set to start automatically. It might also be a good idea to uninstall and reinstall your network drivers (download and save the new drivers before uninstalling the existing ones).

It probably has to do with the Preferred connection setting.

Configure the Cable Network connection to be preferred over the Wireless.

This was written for XP but it is very similar in Win 7.

Configuring Metrics, or how to choose the default connection between Wired and Wireless Connections.

My "DNS Server" set to connect automatically. Is that the same thing? If not, how do make sure the DNS Client Service is running and starting automatically?

I have IP 4 and 6 for both the ethernet and wireless cards. What is the difference?

I followed these instructions and set both wired (4 and 6) to 10 and both wireless to 20, but it didn't solve the problem.

I did notice that if I disable the wireless card (not just turn wifi off) I do connect automatically again when plugging the cable back in.

I guess I can just do that, but I'd like to be able to connect with my wired option with having to enable/disable the wireless card because I do use wireless sometimes.

Thanks

Check the DHCP range in the Router, make sure that it can provide IPs to all your Network Devices + few spare.

If you use HomeGroup sharing for your LAN leave the IP6 as is, otherwise uncheck from both Network connections.

My uVerse router has 4 ports...two go to tv's, one to my desktop, and one to my laptop.

What is a good range to use for DHCP on the router?

Thanks!

Upgrade NIC drivers

Uninstall any network management software and let windows do the work.
