Great movie!!! I saw it 3 times.

I hope people don't fall into the "Lucas" trap. When the trilogy is done, they are probably going to release some sort of "special edition" box set with all three, extra footage, etc. I know one of my friends has about 8 different sets of Star Wars videos because Lucas would add 10 minutes of footage here and 15 minutes of footage there.

In either case, great price for a great movie. I can't wait for the third one.

Waiting on the extended edition. The extra scenes in FOTR added a bunch to that movie. Can't wait to see the additional footage.

Exactly, why buy the chopped-down theater version? I'll wait for the (November?) complete version.

yup, I'm not falling for that again. I bought the LOTR first day it came out. My buddy picked up the special edition and it was soooo much better. That's what you get for being a die hard fan. A$$ rape. Thanks, much appreciated.

Are there definitely going to be two versions again this time? Last time, they announced the SE and it's
release date up front (before releasing the theatrical one). I ended up getting the theatrical version
free by doing the Kia test drive (they didn't even really make you take the drive, just gave you the coupon)
and then buying the SE when it came out.

Glad to see other people were as upset about the SE as I was. I am waiting it out this time too.

I am one of Lucas' victims on the Star Wars films. At least I am trying to learn from past mistakes :D

I grabbed the theatrical release free from BB and ended up making $5.:) I lend it out to friends. I bought the SE bundled with the bookends. That one does not leave my house. I'll try to do the same with TT.

I'll rent or Netflix the theatrical edition....holding out for extended as well. If its 1/2 as good as FoTR Extended, it'll be worth the wait and extra cost.

I don't know why people were so pissed off about the FOTR extended version being released later. It contained 30 minutes of new footage, entirely different extra features, and came with a rebate if you bought the first version and a ticket to see the Two Towers. Richter, you are obviously not a die hard fan because if you were you could have easily found out that they were releasing an extended version as they announced it over 6 months before it came out and over 3 months before the original version came out and it was all over the internet. Also if you were a true die hard fan you would have bought both versions and been extremely happy you did. Just so everyone knows, they most likely will come out with another "final" or "ultimate" edition after all three movies are out. But again, New Line and Peter Jackson have assured the fans that they will make it worth their while and it will again not contain material already on the other DVDs.

I got in on this deal. $17.99 is pretty sweet, you can't really go wrong. Yes the extended version is coming out in November. But you just _know_ there's going to be a MEGA BOX SET once all three DVDs have come out. This will be the one to get. In the meantime, the theatrical release will tide me over.

Why so upset about buying both versions? The original DVD ended up being almost free since there was a mail-in rebate included in the extended version for $10 back to those who bought both (plus the free movie ticket in the extended).

As for Star Wars. I like having the various versions. If Lucas follows through with what he said (no original version Star Wars on DVD), that means the only way you will see the original 1977 Star Wars is if you have one of the original VHS or Laser Disk copies.

I personaly like having the various versions of all the films (rather than waiting for the "final" version).

PS. You might want to wait rather than pre-ordering right away; last time, the various stores all had "deals" with the pre-order (for example, Best Buy let you pre-order plus the price went down right before release so they lowered the price for the people who pre-ordered, plus they gave those who did the pre-order a $10 online gift card. So the DVD ended up costing something like $17-$10 gift card-$10 MIR if you also bought the extended version= make $3 on the original DVD...)

I'm still hoping they come out with a movie-only single-side single-disc version of the extended LOTR dvd. I bought the theatrical version, rented the extended version, enjoyed the extra footage but didn't like the fact that I had to change discs. if I get a dvd jukebox it probably won't affect me much. but in the meantime, I'd still prefer a single side extended LOTR dvd.

I have both from the fellowship, and I am happy that I have them. I did not want to wait the extra 3 months for extended, and I won't be able to wait again. Also, sometimes I want to see the theatrical release. The cut scenes are interesting, but the movie moves a little quicker and is cleaner in the theater version. Don't get me wrong, when I watch the movie with people that have seen it before I reach for the extended... but for first time watchers I think the theatrical release is a little easier for them to handle.

Yeah, I'm buying the normal versions and renting the extended versions. Then in a year, the super deluxe set will be out.

Hopefully they aren't stupid when they make the 4 disc set this time.

For the first LoTR the 2 disc set has the movie on one disc and the extra stuff on the second.

The 4 disc set has the movie split over 2 disc for some stupid reason so I have to get up and swap DVDs every time after they decide who's going to take the ring to Mordor. Really a pain in the butt and annoying.

To reiterate what ShowdOWN said, I guarantee you this will be $13.97 at Wal-Mart. They always PM the lowest price for new movies, and often it is 13.97(usually Circuit City). Don't forget what happened with Star Wars too, it was as low as $9.99 I think.

Any die hard fans are going to want to get both movies. The first release has totally different extras and also it comes out months earlier so
why not just spend the $14 dollars or so and get it.

The reason the SE of the movie is on 2 dvds is that its too long to fit on one. Look for the exact same thing with TwoTowers.
