I play LOTRO, and have played *many* MMOs over the years. I rather enjoy the game, but it's not for everyone. The crowd is generally tame, PVP isn't a major part of the game, and is something of a smell-the-roses type game. Those are all positives to me ? I don't have 20 hours a week to spend on a game (anymore!) but might be negatives to others.

If you're a hardcore, blitz-through-content-to-raid-at-end-game type, it will disappoint you. It's very casual- and generally solo- friendly. It's quest-centric, not super gear-oriented and grinding isn't really necessary.

I'm also in a large, very casual-friendly guild, which is nice. It balances being able to raid with not being hardcore as well as I've ever seen it done.

This is what LOTRO is all about.

Coldkilla - it sounds like you hooked up with a group of alts. They've done the same quests a bazillion times - they're only purpose is to get to a high level as fast as possible.

Starting the game at this point, that's what 90% of the people he meets at level 5 will be; alts who're levelling their second, third, seventh character. How much he speaks up about being a newbie and how they react will define his experience. If you're new, speak up. You'll find the LOTRO crowd far more accommodating than, say, the WoW crowd.
