Loosing internet after XP in running 2+ hours

I have been loosing my Internet after 2+ hour of XP Home running. It happened before and I just reloaded a backup image of my drive from a time when connectivity was good and it worked fine for a couple of months and then WHAM!, It happened again. I'm not sure if it's some software I?m installing that?s blocking things? I have two computers running off the same cable modem through a switch. The other PC connects fine while the other cannot connect. I have tried installing new drivers for my on board 1GB NIC with no success. The only thing that works to get my connection back is rebooting or I just found out if I go into network connections and disable my local area connection and wait a couple of seconds and then enable it, all is well, internet works again. When it is down none of my browsers work, I Explorer, Firefox, Oprah... Unfortunately I don?t have a recent backup of my Drive and would like to just fix the problem with out reinstalling windows. If anyone can give me some insight or help fix my problem I would love to hear.

Thanks 🙂

mmmm, one cable modem and two computers on a switch with only one having connectivity. Do you have a DHCP or Static ISP? Answering that question would be a start.

I was just looking at my Network connection advanced details and it says ?Lease obtained 03/03/06 8:42:51 PM? and right after says ?Lease expires 03/03/06 9:42:51 PM?. I am not sure what this is but could it expire in one hour and drop my connection? Does anyone know what this is and if it could be my problem? I will try to wait and see if the connection is lost at that time.

i think that just means that your pc asked for or your router allocated it a dynamic ip address that was valid for 1 hour only. at the end of that time, the pc has to ask for another one (or more likely, ask for its lease on that number to be renewed for another hour)

The OP has no router just a switch. The leasing thing is not the problem. The problem is that your ISP assigns you one IP address and your computers are fighting for it. The one who wins gets internet, the loser gets nothing. Buy a router if your ISP allows it in their ToS or buy another IP address.

I agree with bluestrobe. You can't have two computers pulling IP addresses from your ISP (this is what you are doing if you really are connecting to the modem with just a switch) unless you are paying your ISP to give you two separate address. Just get a simple home router and let it share the connection with your two computers and you won't see this problem again.
