Looks or performance - which do you care about more in a car?

notfred

Lifer
Which do you like more in a car, looks or performance? I think I'll be able to tell if people answer honestly by the results.

I'd have to say both.

I'm not going to pick a car that performs well but looks like crap.

and

I'm not going to pick a car that looks really good but is a piece of crap.

<< I don't race so looks is more important to me. >>

at least you're honest.
I find it humorous that everytime a mustang (79-93), grand national, or other similar car that's fast, but not neccesarily pretty is mentioned on here, there's a whole lot of "damn, that car's ugly" responses.... yet, only one persion so far has voted that they care more about looks.

<< It takes a combination of both to sell me. >>

I could give up top-notch performance for some luxury inside and a nice-looking car outside. I've found as I've gotten older, I want more creature comforts and not so much riding-on-rails handling.

Nissan Se-R Spec V. Looks and performance are both possible at the same time. 🙂

there are other things more important than either of those though--- such as affordability. (which the spec v also has. 😀)

Performance... I'm assuming by looks you mean the exterior. That's why I love Acura TL's... they're not really attractive cars, but they are sweeeeet rides... power and comfort. Plus, as I'm on ATOT forum have the best Price/Performance ratio 😀

Has to be a balance. Must look good and have go.

True, but no matter which way you slice it, thoes cars are ugly. 🙂

Dude I just said I didn't like that body style, I didn't call it ugly or knock on it's performance! It's a 5.0 for crying out loud!

For me, i'd rather have a sleeper then a riced out look at me-slow econobox. But if I was looking to purchase a car, i'm not going to settle, i'm going to find something that fits me.

Both

I'll never buy another vehicle again unless it's exactly what I want in both looks and performance.

I bought a '97 Nissan Extended Cab new. It looked nice, but it wasn't the color I would have preferred. It had some of the things I wanted in a truck, not everything, but enough that I told myself it would do. It didn't. The entire time I had it I hated that it was black instead of silver so that it showed every little smudge. I hated that it was a four-cylinder and didn't have enough power. I hated that it had manual hubs instead of automatic ones. I hated that no one could sit in the extended part comfortably unless they were under the age of 8. So, as soon as I could I traded it for a silver, 4-door, 6 cylinder, Toyota Tacoma with automatic 4 wheel drive.

Never settle on either looks or performance if there's any way you can help it.

I can't pick just one. I don't want a powerful, yet nasty looking car, nor do I want a beautiful whimp mobile.

I must say it has to be a blend of beauty and brawn.

Little from column A, little from column B. If a car looks like it was beaten with the ugly stick(Honda Insight), yet performed better(gas mileage) than anything on the planet I'd avoid it like the plague. Conversely, if it looked like the most beatiful car on earth(V12 Mercedes, can't recall the name) but sucked performance wise, I'd avoid it like the plague as well.

hey, i like 80's Grand nationals, they're sweet lookin 🙂 same with 80's monte carlos. The whole boxy look really gets me going. 3rd gen camaros are sweet too, but too slow. Anyways, i'd drive a pile of sh!t if it got me where i was going in a hurry, i don't care what it looks like so long as it's mine 😉

i'd prefer a sleeper anyways, like a 2003 Marauder 😀

If I could figure out a way to do it, - 6 speed manual with AWD, some suspension tuning and bump up the engine to about 500 HP. I would not change a thing about the looks, except perhaps for wheels and tires. I have always loved sleepers.

Performance. IMO a car is worthless if it looks good but it performs badly. Sure I don't expect a bentley to race around a track but if your car looks fast and it isn't it sucks.

features/luxury items
can be safety features such as abs or side airbags
and luxury items such as sunroof, heated seats, leather etc.

so comfort is a #1 priority, then probably looks, and at last performance.

As I grow older, a nice smooth ride and nice leather seats for my ever widening middle class ass seem to take the number one spot in voting. 😀

I went with my Mom to test drive a new Cadillac DTS a week or so ago, I gotta tell you, that thing was awesome.

My perfect car (if I really didnt need an SUV or pick-up):

Crown Victoria, with a Police Interceptor package
about 400HP, and tons of low end torque, a nice paxton or similar under hood blower
double pane windows to block out every single bit of external noise
quadruple noise deadening materials
10 disc CD changer and about 1200 watts of music, with a nice pair of 15" subs in the truck...better make that 2200 watts to drive the subs...and awesome AM reception for those talk-radio days 😀
super nice and comfy leather seats, with some degree of bolstering to hold you in place
super cushy springs, with really fat sway bars, and continually adjusting and auto sensing shocks to firm up the ride when needed, maybe even an the cabin adjuster
those nice aluminum BBS type wheels that some Crown Vics come with some relatively wide and good handling tires
AC that can blow out 10F degree air, and cooled seats like the new Navigator to keep my ass from sweating on long road trips
Heated seats and an auto start system so I never have to get in a cold car
Chloroform system for the passenger seat for when my wifes gets naggin on me

Oh Yeah, I would like for it to get about 25 in town and 35 on the road....and under 30k if possible 😀
We are getting close here, but still a few items need attention

I would say performance. I refuse to rice out a car unless I've got the power to go with that stuff. Any car that's kept up with good performance is not going to have a completely dead shell that looks like crap. It might not be the best looking car, but if I've kept it up it's not going to look like sh!t.
