What a waste of money.

It's a couple of grand worth of condoms...not exactly a major contributor to our national debt.

If the US government is buying them I'd bet they cost $100 per condom.

Shipping is the expensive part.

Let me clarify, $100/condom plus shipping.

These are gamma ray proof 🙂

Didn't someone from this forum have a girlfriend/wife that was going to Antartica for a year? Guess we know what she is up to! 😉

Nothing lives down there.

Penguins

That will teach penguins not to bend over.

Penguins can't bend over, they lie down on their belly.

Ah, worked at Antarctica now, have we? 😀

I wish condoms were that cheap...maybe if I bought 16,500 of them at a time.

Everyone in this thread disappoints me to no end. One word has not yet been mentioned.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

My wife was on a research vessel for six weeks down there a couple years ago. They made a stop or two on the continent. Didn't go to McMurdo Station though...I know they stopped at Palmer Station.

bulk + online, except the shipping would kill any kind of bulk discount you get.

There, happy?

Budgetary constraints caused them to seek a much cheaper alternative to the expensive membrane used for radiosonde deployment. A rubber filled with He can lift most instruments just as well as the membranes costing 30x as much.

lol except condoms can't survive the extreme temperature like the membrane.

Link. Assuming approximately half of the base is male, that's 262 condoms per person. Gotta have something to do during the off-hours, right? And what else are you going to do at a remote antarctic base?

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - One of the last shipments to a U.S. research base in Antarctica before the onset of winter darkness was a year's supply of condoms, a New Zealand newspaper reported on Monday.

Bill Henriksen, the manager of the McMurdo base station, said nearly 16,500 condoms were delivered last month and would be made available, free of charge, to staff throughout the year to avoid the potential embarrassment of having to buy them.

The base only has a skeleton staff through the long winter.

"Since everybody knows everyone, it becomes a little bit uncomfortable," Henriksen told the Southland Times newspaper.

About 125 scientists and staff are stationed at McMurdo base, the largest community in Antarctica, during the winter months when there is constant darkness.

The first sunrise will occur on August 20 and McMurdo's population will start to increase again in September when supply flights resume, peaking at more than 1,000 during the summer period.

What's so bad about having to buy condoms? Who feels bad about that?

I'm guessing a lot of adultery occurs down there? If that's the case, maybe they should feel bad about it.
