it's a fwd unibody wagon that's 5 inches longer than an OG caravan and the same height. totally a minivan.

anyway, apparently UKMET has been the most accurate model so far for this storm, and guess which major model is the outlier and still has this thing going into galveston bay?

True story. Wife and I took a trip to London several years ago for an anniversary. When we picked up our little Ford Fiesta rental the rental agent said it was behind the “large SUV”.

The large SUV was a Kia Sportage.

I almost replied, “Lady, I’m from Texas. That Kia would fit in the back of my SUV”. I didn’t though because I didn’t want to be an asshole Texan/American.
 
Texas seems not to license vehicles that don't require an integrated airstair to board. Nobody can fit their trucks into the garages or carports around here so they're all street parked lol.

There are some people that are practically at the point of conspiracy theory where they say it's going to make a hard left and hit Houston as the main Target and increase to a Cat4.

Time will tell, time to sleep on this and hope it looks better in the morning.

It does look like it’s strengthening but so far it should still pass well East of us. So I think we’ll still get some high winds and rain but fingers crossed that should be it.
 
She is now a CAT 2. My thoughts are with all of you that live in its path. Being a Floridian, I can empathize with the emotional roller coaster these powerful storms take you on. Hopefully she keeps moving forward at 17mph or more, the less time she spends over you, the better.
 
Cat 3 now but the track looks about the same, maybe a bit more eastward, which is good for Texas.

"The hurricane is now a Category 3 with 115 mph winds and is expected to continue strengthening. Laura could briefly become a Category 4 hurricane later today.

Areas that see the strongest winds on the upper Texas and southwest Louisiana coasts could have widespread power outages possibly lasting for days, if not over a week, downed trees and structural damage. Wind gusts are likely to top 100 mph in these areas."

Whelp... it strengthened alright... 115mph, will be a CAT4 and it's not even anywhere near the coast yet.

Regardless, looks like we will make it out mostly unscathed since it didn't veer more west.

Wind just got upgraded to 125 mph, 5 mph short of a cat 4. Hopefully this continues to track east of Houston, but places like Beaumont are going to get hit hard.

Storm surge is going to be massive as well.
 
You know it's not good when NOAA says:

"Unsurvivable storm surge with large and destructive waves will cause catastrophic damage from Sea Rim State Park, Texas, to Intracoastal City, Louisiana, including Calcasieu and Sabine Lakes. This surge could penetrate up to 30 miles inland from the immediate coastline."
 
And it's now a cat 4 with 140 mph sustained winds and higher gusts..

"Hurricane Laura has strengthened into an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center. It now has maximum sustained winds of up to 140 mph."

"Right now, the storm is forecast to keep its Category 4 strength when it makes landfall after midnight tonight, near the Texas and Louisiana border."

We are done and done till this thing is over.

Had a few more storm shutters to put up today - took all furniture and remaining items that might fly away and put it in the garage...

Should be good to go tonight.



... Just hope the power doesn't go out for 2 weeks like during Ike.... otherwise were getting the fuck out of here after the storm blows through.

I’m done too. I’ve got shutters up everywhere I want them and stuff is crammed into the garage along with 2 of 3 cars.

Helped my in-laws yesterday with a second story window and a neighbor down the street today. (Neighbor is a first time home owner and basically has no tools or hardware for putting up shutters).

3 car tandem garage definitely helped us out. Managed to put in our outdoor furniture, other random crap AND 3 cars in it.

lol I had so many people in our neighborhood on Facebook asking all kinds of questions... apparently the builders were supplying homes with hurricane shutters or whatever, but many didn't I guess get the bolts installed that the shutters are screwed down to.

People scrambling to do things like buy huge bolts, install them properly into the home... yeaaaah... I guarantee they didn't get far.
