CENTERBURG ? The Centerburg Board of Education has canceled Saturday?s graduation exercises.

Thursday evening the board met in an emergency session described as ?several hours of intense and thorough discussion.? The special meeting focused on a breach into the school?s computer system by a senior student which resulted in copying some tests for a senior course.

The board, in a press release, explained the discovery of the cheating came so late and was of such extent ? involving in various ways many members of the senior class, both by some who participated in cheating and others, while not directly participating, had knowledge of this activity but failed to report it ? that cancellation of graduation ceremony was warranted.

Board member Leroy Bumpus said, in the press release, the board believes there are some students who were not involved in the cheating and regrets their sacrifice of no graduation ceremony. However, he continued, the board determined that it was necessary to make it clear to all Centerburg students and the community that cheating cannot and will not be tolerated and must have consequences.

?This is a very sad day for all of us,? Bumpus said, ?and we do commit ourselves to taking all the necessary actions to see that such a situation as this never recurs.?

Colin Borden, 18, admits he used the printed tests to cheat and is willing to accept his punishment but feels other students should be sheltered from disciplinary action.

?Yes, I used the test,? Borden said. ?I am fully aware and accept my punishment but not everyone should be punished. Students from the Knox County Career Center are being held from graduation and they don?t attend the same building, there is no way they could be involved.?

Borden said senior students were called into the school for questioning by the high school and middle school principals as well as law enforcement from the Knox County Sheriff?s Office.

Knox County Sheriff David Barber told the News this morning no arrests have been made but the investigation is ongoing.

Corrections and improvements in the school?s computer system and procedures are now being made and tested to achieve the highest level of security.?

Diplomas will be mailed to all qualified seniors next week.

Parents plan to hold a graduation ceremony Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Centerburg Memorial Park.

As of press time, students were protesting the cancellation of graduation. The News is continuing to follow the story and will have more in Saturday?s edition and on www.mountvernonnews.com.

I've always wondered about this. I assume anybody who is planning on going to college is already accepted and their plans are already in motion. Who cares if they officially "gradumicate"? I remember mid-way through my senior high school year that I had already been accepted and offered a scholarship to the college that I planned on attending, so I no longer worried about my school performance or grades. I always wondered what would happen if I would have just walked away and not officially completed my classes. Is a high school degree an actual requirement to attend college? Are there holds on place until the college officially receives a high school graduation diploma?

^^^ It's never too late for the school to take all that away. Most (all?) schools have clauses that you have to continue to progress or you lose everything you were offered.

I have heard stories of colleges taking away their offer b/c they stopped caring senior year. tehy went from A student to C student and BAM....they get a letter from college saying "bye, see you later".

Have to love when school boards act more like children than the people they watch over. The whole taking vengeance on a big group of people whom most are innocent because they feel like idiots isn't very classy. I wish I didn't go to my graduation anyway just a boring waste of time; I only went for my parents.

Kinda like a pillow-party. It's sad, but punishing everyone is a better deterent, since now an entire class will socially-rape the offenders. Considering how important it is to be 'liked' as a kiddy, this makes a pretty good deterent.

My grade 10 math teacher actually did this. One guy was caught cheating, everyone in all her classes had to rewrite a much harder version of the test.

Graduation ceremonies are a big deal. Even if some of you don't think so (I'm betting the majority of ATOT weren't very happy in high school). For many people getting to have that ceremony with the friends they've known for years is a very big deal. Then there's family to think about. For many parents seeing their child graduate high school is a huge deal. I had many family members come from hundreds of miles away to attend my graduation. I flew many hundreds of miles to attend the graduation of one of my cousins.

if they're still getting their diplomas - who gives a rats ass? The graduation ceremony sucks anyway

LOL, I'll have to ask my parents about this. They live near there and know someone on that school board.

I call shens on the school canceling the grad ceremonies just because of this hacking incident

I bet the school is short on money and they saw an out and took it.

WHoop de fricken doo. So they still get to graduate, but they dont have to go to the lame ceramony. Seems like a WIN WIN to me.

LEEERRROOOOYYYYYYY BUUUUMMMMMPPPPUUUUUUSSSSSSSS!

Wouldn't bother me if I was a senior... no grad ceremony? Oh man I might just have killed myself I'd be so depressed.

I think that's fairly common actually. If you fuck off and fail so badly your senior year that you don't earn your diploma, most colleges will yank your enrollment.

And like you said, if you graduate, but go from an 'A' to a 'C' student, you can say buh-bye to that ivy league school and scholarship for which you worked so hard. Enjoy community college.

Graduation ceremonies are dumb anyway.

Yeah taking away graduation ceremonies isn't really a punishment... taking away graduation is though.

You can be sure the parents don't see it that way. For them the ceremony is the only important thing. There will be scathing letters written claiming how horribly unfair it was to ruin little Billy's 5 seconds of fame and rob generations to come from enjoying blurry photos of Billy walking across the stage.
