Looks like my Core 2 Duo purchase will be delayed another quarter

If the info is correct, Q1 pricing for the E4300 is $163. Q2 will see it at $113 plus the E4400 at $133. Of course even if those are Intel's unit pricing in quantities, who knows what price they'll hit the street at.

I'll just patiently wait... still hoping for that next Celeron 300A. In this case, a Core 2 Duo motherboard and CPU combo for under $200 which will hit 3GHz+.

Yeah, I've been holding off on getting a core duo also but now I will finally take the plunge when these price cuts hit.

Then what will the excuse be? The K8L will be coming and look good? AMD will be slashing prices to the bone or another INtel slash? I dont wait. I buy it when I want it. I just buy lower speed chips and OC them to higher levels to get bang for the buck. I try not to spend more then 300 on a cpu, 150 on a mobo, and the video card can nevefrf be more then the cpu.

The "excuse" is trying to justify spending money at all when I already have a perfectly fine functioning machine. Based on my personal budget and my personal comfort level with computer component spending, and what I feel my needs are, I try to limit my spending to no more than $150 on a CPU, versus Duvie's $300. My dollar amount is no more right or wrong than Duvie's dollar amount. I'm sure he didn't pull that number out of thin air, and has some reasoning behind it. I also have my reasons behind my number. If someone is willing to cough up the extra $150 to bump me into $300 CPU territory I'm not gonna turn it down. Cash out of my own wallet? I'll keep it below $150, thanks.

It'll just be that way unless someone can demonstrate that I personally gain some benefit from the more expensive purchase. Sure, I can understand and appreciate other people having a use for a faster CPU. Hopefully they can understand and appreciate my lack of use for a faster CPU. I don't do Folding or SETI. I leave my DVDs as DVDs. Sure, at LAN parties we all run benchmarks. I just laugh and congratulate the owners of the faster computers.

If the K8L is under $150 and isn't inferior in performance and overclockability to an under $150 C2D, then why not? Signs point to that NOT happening, in which case back to plan A, buying an under $150 C2D that uses an 800MHz FSB.

Another price cut? Sure. If it's "OMG in 24 months the quad cores will be $200" then I will file that info away and promptly forget it. If it is "OMG in 3 weeks Intel/AMD is cutting prices 30% across the board" then that may make me hold off a bit longer - as long as I believe it to be more than just a rumor.

Most people here will definately be spending a minimum of $300 on a video card and probably less than that on a CPU. I wouldn't blame someone who has an aging socket939 or 754 system to be waiting for price cuts before buying a new system.

that's me C2D is pretty tempting, but I can't justify overhauling my main system for one right now (an opteron 165)

a sub $200 cpu/mobo C2D that o/cs to 2.8ghz+ would be the straw that breaks my wallet

Well, I upgraded a DFI Lanparty UT SLI-D, X2 3800+ @ 2.6Ghz and 2GB Mushkin DDR-500 for my current C2D setup and I couldn't have been happier really. It was just a good time for me to upgrade (I had the extra money). If it were now, maybe I'd wait and see how the prices look, but a few months ago I wanted to upgrade and I did cause I could.

I'm with you Zap, Q2 will give us lower prices, and more refined hardware. I've never been a bleeding edge buyer, the rate of depreciation is too severe, however, I do understand there are users that truly need the extra processing cycles....

I was going to buy a new system, but instead I decided to overclock my 7800GT to 500/1160 and now I can run Oblivion maxed out with HDR with almost no hiccups.

I get about 20-25fps, but I really can't tell because I'm being overwhelmed by all the eye candy.

7800GT OCed to 500/1160


Seriously, overclocking the parts I already have have been the best choice.

I didn't mean it bad...Just people who always seem to wait are the same that always seem to have reasons to wait and prolonging their wait....

I say the E6300 is a nice price now...sub 200 is a nice chip and likely less then most will pay for the vid card.
