Looks like Los Angeles has started metering some freeway junctions

Two I've seen so far are 57 onto the 210 west and 605 onto the 210 east. Seems to help traffic flow on the freeway you're merging onto but totally sucks for all the cars waiting for the meter. You could be stuck behind them for a good 15-20 minutes to get through.


Edit: I'm not talking about the stoplights at a on-ramp but where a freeway merges onto another freeway.

you mean the stop light before you can merge onto the freeway?

No, not the on-ramps but where on major freeway merges onto another. The merging freeway is metered with stoplights.

Usually they have a stop light which only lets one car, or maybe a couple of cars onto the highway at a time.

They have to do something, and that's a reasonable move. Building more highways is not the answer.

not like you have a lot of options in a place like LA. too spread out for current mass transit systems. And you can only put so many lanes on a freeway.

What's your plan?

In some places they tried to use chevrons on the road, so you would keep enough distance back for safetly and easy merging. But I doubt that it would work.

They've put the lights on some Atlanta on-ramps but they're not active yet (at least the ones I encounter).

They use those heavily in the Portland, OR area. They're great IMO, & we don't have anywhere near the traffic an area like LA has.

The main drawback to them is that whenever the lights are on the homeless hang out by the left lane. Nothing like a captive audience.

The one from 217 to 26 east sucks and is stupid. 217 gets so backed up you can't honestly say people are saving time. One freeway to another should not be metered.

The lights at on ramps also suck, but at least I see the point.

Yeah it's been operational for a few weeks now. I get out of class late and have had to take numerous detours because they shut down the freeway interchange at night to build this thing. It's on both the 210 East and West interchanges of the 57 and 605. The 210 has become a nightmare ever since they opened up the corridor to the 15 a few years back. Surprisingly, the 10fwy now moves quicker.

Lol building lanes isn't going to solve a traffic nightmare if the volume is already too much. That volume still has to go somewhere. So whether they're entering or exiting, volume is volume. No reason to add more when the existing infrastructure already can't handle it. Additional lanes will only create a false sense of increased capacity while simultaneously being an utter waste of time and money.

the metering on the freeways have been around for a while. 405 South to 10E has it. 110S to 105E, 105E - 405N have it.

Its been there for ages.. the stuff out by 210/57 is newer.

Yea, meters are all over the place. I particularly hate the 105 to the 710 N with all the trucks. The 710 S to 91 East is also pretty poopy. I'm kind of indifferent - they regulate the flow of traffic yes, but some people think that merging onto the freeway at 40mph is good, which happens moreso with the metered onramps because it's from a full stop.

Speaking of onramps, has anyone ever gone on the carpool 105 west to 110 north carpool? Wow talk about great views - it's one of the highest onramps in the nation I think and you can see all of L.A. on a clear day. Was going over it one day during sunset and nearly wanted to stop and get out to admire the view.
