Looks like I'm going to need a Lawyer. Tips?

Tim

I'm in a pretty stupid situation, and I'm going to require the services of a Lawyer.

I already have a huge list of Lawyers in my area, and what I would like to ask of you ATOT'ers is how I should go about selecting one. What criteria should I expect him/her to meet? I could elaborate on the situation if necessary.

EDIT: Situation explained below.

i would ask friends or relatives if they know a good lawyer. usually someone does, and that lawyer will either be able to help you or recommend someone who can help you.

Obviously, just open the phone book to attorneys, close your eyes and put your finger on a name....then open your eyes to see who it's gonna be. You have as good of a chance of getting a decent lawyer that way as you do by asking ATOT...😛

Word of mouth recommendations are the best way to get a good lawyer IMO. It really depends on what kind of lawyer you want/need; family law, accident/injury, etc.

I have no idea, and I doubt anyone else here will either. The best way would be to get opinions from someone in the legal system who's familiar with the lawyer's work. Otherwise, roll the dice and hope you win. If your case is straight forward, minimum competency is all that's required.

I have no idea, but I still think you should elaborate on the situation for the purpose of entertaining us.

I've used a friend's recommended lawyer for myself once. She did ok, but I really don't think I got the best service. I'd still rather do that than randomly pick numbers from a phone book though.

I also have hired a lawyer that was formerly hired against the company I worked for. I saw that he was unbending and demanding when I was trying to convince him of the fact. That tough attitude was exactly what I needed in a different legal situation. So I hired him a couple years later. It was kind of odd going from enemy to friend, but it is a lawyers job to change their alligence as needed.

You might be able to pay a lawyer to recommend another one to you. They would have the best knowledge of the different attorneys in your area. I have serious doubts about most lawyer's ethics though, and you could end up funneled to one of their friends :^/

Many lawyers offer a free first consultation. Get a couple of recommendations from friends and then ask for a free consultation. Pick the one that you feel most comfortable with.

If you don't have a referral from someone, try going to Martindale.com and picking someone in your area who practices the kind of law that you're looking for and is AV-rated. That's a peer rating, and is the highest they do. It requires a certain number of years experience to qualify. If you want to expand, a BV-rating is usually a good lawyer with less experience than an AV.

Find a few and do an intake session with each if you can. Pick the one that makes you most comfortable.

If you have money to burn, you could go to a large firm.

Fair enough

Well, I work for a towing company. We do contract work for various companies, AAA being one of them.

I went to a home to install a new car battery. (BTW, take it from a guy in the business, you're much better off buying and installing your own battery if possible, we kind of rip people on the prices, especially those uppity "premium membership" type of folks) I could tell this guy was going to be "one of those" customers right from the start. When I pulled up, he came out to greet me, and I extended my hand... which he refused of course.

I asked to see his AAA card so I could get the paperwork started, and in quite an indignant mannor, he flicked it onto my clip-board. At that point, I couldn't help but hope that there was something a little more serious wrong with his car than a dead battery, this guy was kind of acting like a prick.

I explained the prices that he would end up paying, and he agreed to it, so I got to work. The guy was even more rude, asking me if I could hurry up... so I naturally took a little extra time. I finished up, and as I was putting the old battery on my truck, a jug of oil fell off of my truck and a little of it poured out onto his driveway. This was a fluke, as we are a very professional company and we take pride in our fleet. How this jug was not secured is beyond me...

I quickly grabbed the jug up, and stopped anymore from leaking out. The guy was going ballistic... screaming, yelling, cursing at me. As quickly as I could, I poured an absorbant onto the spill (Kitty litter) and cleaned up the mess as best as I could. I had a feeling about this guy, so I took a picture of the spot with my phone.

Here's the pic

Already long enough story short, the guy came down to our place and made a huge scene, and we ended up telling him to fck off. Apparently, he's sueing me personally now.

Need a lawyer!

Why do you need the lawyer? There are many differant areas of the law so you have to give a lot more info for there to be any chance of getting anyhelp. Unless it was just a joke thread.

OMG. 10/10. This is a parody thread by which all others will be measured.

And I got owned by posting actual advice. That makes it even better.

Well played, sir. Well played.
