Looks like BestBuy is not doing as well as some think...

Best Buy? Since when?

I'll be picking up an online order @ the Orange Ct store later today.
I'm wondering if he means ordering online for a thing that's in one store, but picking it up in another one? I dunno, I think about half my BB purchases in the last year were ordered online and picked up in-store, a couple of which were UHD discs.

The item I'm picking up could have been shipped to any Best Buy nationwide and held 5(?) days for pickup @ no charge so IDK. (BB site is even setup to arrange for a 3rd-party pickup very easily)

Maybe he meant Frys? 😵

Mentioned in the other thread that ours closed due to lease issues but are supposed to open up at a new location soon. Prior to it closing, I've purchased a few small things from them in the past, but I've always ordered online and picked up in store. That process has been fantastic for me. Never any issues and I'm usually out of there within a few minutes.

The store was never packed though. When I'd go to the online order pickup section, I'd see maybe a dozen people walking through the store. It could be that I'm never there on a weekend, but it's never been busy the times that I would go in.

I'm about 75 miles from the closest Best Buy, so this past year, when I was wanting to buy a Corsair gaming headset from them because they had the best price...of course, I couldn't order it on line and have it delivered...store pick-up only...and at a store that was almost 150 miles from me. (only one in the Puget Sound region for a while) I COULD have paid $20 more and ordered it from Amazon...or $30 more from Newegg...but...fuck that.
I ended up buying an Audio-Technica headset instead.

I've bought 2 things there recently when my TP-Link router died and I had to replace it right away or I'd be staring at angry family.

Hopefully Linksys is better!

And I also bought an air conditioner last year since my 10 year old one died.. normally I'd have bought from Home Depot but not after the CEO revealed himself to be Trumpanzee. Fuck Home Depot.

Best Buy has one advantage over Amazon right now and that is being able to return an item to a store. If that disappears then then they really don't have a chance long term.

Covid-19 has helped them in sales but 2021 and after will be different as everyone gets vaccinated and people go back to regular life.

Nope. With Amazon, you can return in store to any Kohls. Been like that for a couple years now I think.

If I need something right away, I go to Best Buy.
If I want to look at and hold something before I buy it online, I go to Best Buy.

Yeah I love this option and use it quite a bit. Our local Kohls is really close to Costco and we go there a couple times a month so it's really convenient to swing by Kohls and drop off some Amazon returns. Plus Kohls has been offering a 25% off coupon with each return which is nice. In store only but it is stackable so that's cool.

Don't open up THAT can of worms! 😵 😉

*(around these parts thems fighten words!)
Maybe it is my zip code, county, or state. I only know that the last few times I've checked their website for something the first thing I do and find the store closest to me and then product search. Every time it says not available in store and not available for pickup. When I check other stores around me none of them have the product and in those rare occasions I go forward they still report the only means of delivery is by mail.

Or any Amazon locker location ... Amazon does make returns pretty easy. (Kohls will even take care of packaging returns for you)

Mainly what BB has going for it that Amazon lacks is the "instant-gratification" factor combined with being able to touch a product prior to purchase.

Also easy as Amazon returns are these days, you still can't do an on-the-spot "exchange" of a defective motherboard for example without an actual B&M store location that has stock on-hand.

Plus Amazon is getting ridiculously powerful. Their customer experience is amazing but having fewer resellers to buy things from worries me long term.

@Captante Yes, Amazon makes it hella easy to do returns. I was stunned when my wife bought a garment, didn't fit well and she discovered she could return it at Kohl's. And when she did that Kohl's gave her Kohl's Cash as well.
@zzyzxroad Ain't no bigger difference than Costco in Idiocracy. "Welcome to Costco, I love you." or something like that. They even sold time machines! Amazon didn't.
@Scarpozzi Even if the price is the same the idea of making an arrangement to be hand-held by a staff member during this pandemic situation is asinine. I guess they think people will lick the product and leave?

CostCo can't scale like Amazon. They excel in their footprint but are capped by it. They would have to make some drastic changes to alter that and why would they? Amazon can continue add lines and dominate them. Amazon is also a lot more diversified.

Amazon Mkt cap = 1.58T
CostCo Mkt cap = 147.36B

There are many massive differences between the two. Amazon is clearly the more powerful company and the one with more growth potential.

Always a sign of someone who doesn't shop at "insert store name here". Every time I've walked in, I can go straight to the department, pick up what I need, and walk right up to a register. Alternatively, if I stand around for awhile and someone does approach me. They say "Is there anything I can help you with?", I reply "No, I'm good, thanks" and they say "no problem, let us know if you need anything". Wow, such a painful experience!!! You're the same moron who would blast them if they had employees standing around doing nothing and not talking to customers at all. This is basically the retail experience everywhere. Stick to mommy's basement and let her continue to do the shopping.

Don't judge this book by what cover you can see. The last time I went there was in June/July and that was the exact experience. Period. And my recent experience with their online only solidifies my lack of surprise in how poorly they are doing.

Or an Amazon 4 Star store location, if you have one nearby (and I do). It's been super helpful, since I needed to make more returns than normal in the last 6 months.

Exactly how poorly are they doing? They just closed their FY21 and I don't see any metrics that lead me to believe they are doing poorly.

Here is some info about why they are shutting downs stores and laying people off.

I think you meant to ask the OP. I responded to his posting about them doing poorly and my reaction not being surprised.

The OP seems to only have read the headline of the article they posted and may now have abandoned this thread. You both seem to think they are doing poorly so wondering why either of you think that. How did you come to that conclusion?
