Best Buy just laid off 5,000 workers and will close more stores

In the Frys thread some talked how BB was able to stave off the online threat and survive. Looks like between online shopping and COVID-19 maybe they are not doing as well as many think.

I can't remember the last time I bought a PC part in a brick and mortar store.

Heh, once upon a time they were able to exploit the stupid nontech people. things like selling monster cables, etc...

But I wonder how their geek squad is doing? Most people don't even browse the internet anymore, their browsing is just opening apps and scrolling continuously.

Gone are the days of things like having an antivirus.

Did you actually read the article? It's all explained and also talks about how well they are doing. It's a shift towards more online sales and closing some of these B&M stores. They are hiring 2,000 part-time workers and have 102,000 employees. So it's not a signifiant amount of employees.

In November they announced their best quarter in 25 years.

Yep ... inaccurate conclusion by the OP.

Best Buy turned record profits in 2020 and they're just "streamlining" things to coordinate even better with their online presence.

I hope they don't go anywhere as I've got their geek squad warranties on everything I've been buying. :D Anytime you are included in a layoff its a significant event....just saying.

That's true, didn't mean to make layoffs seem insignificant. Obviously It's probably not something they want to do, but they have to shift their business model and keep competitive. It does suck for those who are affected.

Wow, for some reason I thought Greek Squad had changed their name or done some sort of rebranding. So I searched Google and came across this article. o_O

Not really surprising tbh. Seems like it would be a bad idea to bring a PC to any repair shop if it has anything illegal on it. Even if it's just pirated stuff like MP3s you're going to have a hard day if the FBI is involved.

I completely agree that if you have Child Porn or such, they should definitely call the FBI and you should have the wrath of the court systems laid upon you. Then possibly shived or raped in prison, but I digress, lol. Hopefully they were only looking for sex offenders and terrorist. I just hate for them to be looking at small time people who haven't committed violent crimes. Who the heck knows, that is what is scary. But all the Child Pornographers. local terrorist and such, they can burn in hell! Not some dude who has photos of his grow garden or MP3 collection and whatever like that.

I was actually forced to buy a power supply there cuz I didnt want to wait on Amazon. But that was about one year ago.
Their prices and selection are terrible for just about everything. Walmart is cheaper and usually closer. Amazon has more stuff. Newegg is easier whether you know exactly what you want or are just browsing.
Also returning stuff to Best Buy is difficult compared to most stores. And last I heard if you take anything in for repair their strategy is to either force a new sale on you, or give you a ridiculously expensive repair quote for something simple.

I'm reminded of when Blizzard laid off a ton of employees last year, citing the money coming in fell below expectations for that year. As it so happened, it was the most prosperous year the company had ever had in history.

Seems to be par for the course in the US these days. The rich get richer. The poor get poorer.

I spent like $6k+ at Best Buy last year buying a washer, dryer, refrigerator, ps5, multiple xbox x's, and some games.

I did my part.

I also have to say their delivery guys are awesome. Super nice and super efficient.

Yeah we did our dishwasher, washer, and drier with them last year and we've got a new fridge and stove coming today. They're great with appliances.

Another Best Buy customer here.
Gotten good deals on major appliances and I've picked up PC parts from them that were cheaper than online or Microcenter.
It's nice to see stuff in person and the whole immediate satisfaction thing of getting something when I need it (without having to wait for shipping)

I had them drop my washer/dryer off into my garage because i was going to do the install myself and this was like primetime covid and was kind of noid about people coming into my house. The guys couldn't have been nicer though through the whole process, even starting with the phone call they gave me when they were 30 minutes out.

The fridge they installed and took my old one away. They had to take my front door off in order to get the fridges in/out of the house but that took them like 5 seconds and they do that regularly. Then within 25 minutes my new fridge was good to go.

I felt kind of bad though because I took the doors of my old fridge and the freezer drawer out because I didn't think it would fit through my door without doing so, but I was wrong. Then when they took it outside my house, they had to put it all back together for space purposes in the truck.

I did tip them $10 each though because they were super nice and just did a great job.

They can go ahead and die for all I care. They deny you the ability to order online and ship to a store and then charge you $4/DVD for shipping. A-holes can be flushed just as easily as any other shit.
