Looks like AMD got smart

I was planning to build a new system with a AMD64 cpu. I was looking at the 3000+ Venice but this has got me thinking. So what do you guy's recommend? A 3500+ Venice or somthing else?(i'll just save some money on the videocard and buy a card form the next generation when they come out and when i have more money).
 
this is speaking from mostly doing OC'ing on the winnie for a DFI board, but it seems that the newer chips "act" a little differently vs the older ones....the older (end of 04 year) chips seemed to crave voltage, while the newer ones work actually better at or below voltage with a bigger rage of voltages (eg, 1.45 * 115%)...plus....i think Phlargo might be onto something...many ppl dont understand that OCing a A64 isnt the same as a P4 they might have OCed in the past. Each mem controller is different, and you need to do a lot more "tweaking" to get to work at highest speeds...patience is key, and thats where the more exp OCers are getting their great overclocks....i OC'd a lot of P4 C's in my day....easy as pie...crank up the fsb, up the voltage....have good mem, maybe change a divider...you are good to go....not so with A64

Especially with the DFI Nf4! So many settings to play with!

How about a little experiment - set a low base voltage and a higher +% range so they're roughly equal. Then down the volts on both 'til they're unstable and we'll see which works better.
 
If SSE3 is implemented in Games, Venice will perform better. But i dont know any game that uses SSE3 commands. So the answer is: no, sse3 is not a huge advantage.


@pentium-guy: dont be so paranoid bout artfificial oc-limits, sure, its possible in theory but in Praxis, what do u expect from a CPU? That it overclocks one...two...more Gigahertz? They give u a finger and u want the whole arm 😉

Ya clocks are getting better everywhere...

If I put through 1.65v or there about, I believe I can get 2.9ghz stable.. My board starts to crap out around 325 and above though!

Shizza. Looks like it's the 3700+ for me then 😀

EDIT: Speed binning is not artificially limiting overclocking potential. Speed binning is testing CPUs to see what kind of speeds they can achieve, and the ones that can clock higher are binned as higher clock speed parts - ie the ones that do well get sold as 3500+ and 3800+, the ones that dont make that cut are 3000+ and 3200+. That's why the higher models reach higher speeds..

bjc112, what (stock speed) venice did you start with to get to 2.8?
 
Its not an issue of them getting smarter as it is they are being more aggressive. The more aggressive they are with binning usually gives a good sign of yeilds
