In response, Sasse pointed to areas in which he agrees with Trump, then criticizes the president’s response to the coronavirus, although he also accuses the media of having “pretended that COVID is literally the first public health crisis ever. And somehow, it’s Donald Trump’s fault. That’s not true. They just wanted to use it against him.”

“But the reality is that he careened from curb to curb. First, he ignored COVID. And then he went into full economic shutdown mode. He was the one who said 10 to 14 days of shutdown would fix this,” Sasse added. “And that was always wrong. I mean, and so I don't think the way he's lead through COVID has been reasonable or responsible, or right.”

Sasse goes on to criticize the president’s handling of international human rights issues, accusing him of ignoring China’s treatment of both Hong Kong citizens and the Uighur ethnic minority.

"The United States now regularly sells out our allies under his leadership, the way he treats women, spends like a drunken sailor. The ways I criticize President Obama for that kind of spending; I've criticized President Trump for as well,” Sasse said. “He mocks evangelicals behind closed doors. His family has treated the presidency like a business opportunity. He's flirted with white supremacists."

Sasse's problem, as with many Republicans, lies in his failure to understand that his personal brand of conservatism is in fact deeply liberal. While being a conservative, he still believes in republicanism, democracy, and the proposition that all persons are created equal. All of which is liberalism. But he can't reconcile this with the fact Trump and his supporters, including the dominionist evangelicals and the neo-confederates, are rapidly anti-liberal. To those people, the proposition that all persons are created equal is communism. To them, equal protection of the laws is tyranny. Trump champions all that on his dream to monarchy, which is the ultimate anti-liberalism. And what's a Sasse to do?

Yeah, look at that female doctor Trumpie came up with ~6 weeks ago, the superstitious one, black no less. He loves to bounce the crazies, figures it gives him traction with his base, who he figures are anti-science. Honestly, that's exactly his thinking pattern. He won't condemn QAnon because that type of thinking is right up his alley. We really do have to do our best to discredit that man going forward, get as much public animus against him as possible because Trumpism is simply poisonous.
 
I have a feeling (i.e. HOPE) that in the last days (16 to go now!) a flood of endorsements will be made by many many American institutions for Biden/Harris. That should not only further tarnish the monster in chief but his enablers, particularly the ones on the current ballots.
