Looks like a 12 pipe 6800 is pretty gimp

Then again it is quite a bit better in some tests such as FarCry once u crank up the resolution, stiill, i expected better out of that card :/ The call of duty framerates r kinda sad, u would think 12 pipes with not significantly lowered speeds on the core or memory would not fall to 1/2 the performance in an opengl game.

The 700Mhz memory really cripples it.
 
I really hope nobody buys this card until it drops to around the $250 price point. Had they included the 9800 Pro, it would have matched the 6800 in several benches.

im wondering what the x800SE will actually do for the market...considering the x800's are just ultra-refreshed R300 cores, won't dropping it back down to 8 pipes make it basically comparable to the 9800pro/XT's? I mean even the vanilla 6800, though sometimes only pulling 5950 levels, still has 12 pipes to the FX's 4 and it showed on the Farcry and Splinter Cell benches where it pulled way ahead of the 5950. But yeah, correct me if I'm wrong, but what will the x800SE really have other than a decent overclock over a 9800 series card, being that we've seen that the 16-to-12 pipe drop it obvious on the Pro, and back down to 8 seems to just defeat the purpose.
 
Yeah its an odd thing for them to gimp a card so much. Espescially when they are like exactly the same core. You would think one of the companies would try to undercut the other by giving thier lowest card a greater number of pipes to beat the others in performance at the same price. They must have thier reasons though.

Well Nvidia has already done that with the GT at 16 pipes. They usually don't make the bread and butter money from the top end cards though.
 
Memory looks like it is holding it back bigtime.
The card is supposed to fill the 250-300 dollar nitch so it is marginally faster than the 5950 which is now or should be in that price range.

I thought the GT looked rather good against its true competitor the X800 Pro.
 
Once the cards are in stock all over the place the prices from both camps will start dropping and we'll know how these cards really stack up...if ATi is smart they'll drop the Pros into the 300-350 category where NV has nothing to compete with it and just rake in the dough...otherwise this 250-350 is only occupied by the vanilla 6800 and it's only an ok card, not really worth the dough.
 
This card is in stock and $235 at Galaxy3000, rated 8.5 on reseller ratings. At that price, I don't see how you can go wrong with it.
 
About what I expected.
ATI's cards do very well with core speeds, NVidia's with RAM. 700MHz just does not cut it. There's a great GPU hidden in there, but it is being starved. If one of the campanies makes one with 2.2ns (or better?) RAM, that'd be a sweet deal.

The review I am waiting to see is the nvnews review of the BFG Tech 6800GT OC and 6800Ultra OC. It will also feature Far Cry with the SM.30 patch which should be very interesting.
 
Ok the primary game im going to be playing will be Halflife2 and its CS mutliplayer. Now one would think ATI might perform a lil better in HL2 as they have the deal with Valve going on. Im wondering do you guys think the 9800Pro or the 6800nu will be better for that sole game. (not with FSAA and what not, just stock settings, thank you 😀 )
 
6800, just judging by these benches. Don't hold me to that, though--you'll have to wait for HL2's release to see trustworthy numbers.

Does NVN have the patch/mod, or are you just saying? The 6800GT is (way) out of this thread's league, though ($235 vs. $400+).

ROFL, thanks for the flame. FYI, I had no idea the 6800 was going for 235 when I posted this and the 5950 is 367 on pricewatch atm, not quite 200 more.

Pete, those benchmarks make me want to buy a $235 6800. They are amazing in price/performance if done correctly.

Must....keep...finger....off...buy....button...

Rollo: Eh. I'd put more faith in FS's benchmarks than those of some nameless Czech site (or at least one lacking any name we can read). That being said, they do seem to be awfully thorough (reminiscent of digit-life) , so I'd wait till more sites have had a chance to bench it, as it *is* possible that they have the correct numbers and not FS.
 
As it turns out, they jacked the price $100 so it's a moot point. (for me anyway)
The GT is the card to get of this line for someone like me anyway, if not the Ultra.
