Looks like 28nm GPUs aren't coming till early 2012

I think its just a rumor, that could be bad for nvidia though... depending on how the 6950/6970/6990 turns out.
That would also make the 6990 look more attractive, It ll most likely be the most powerfull single card you can buy for along time.

So what is next? Well, both TSMC and GLOBALFOUNDRIES will have 28 nm on line by early 2012. TSMC is actually hoping for production to happen in Q2 2011, but their track record is not exactly spotless.

The guy that wrote the artical doubts TSMC can get it ready before 2012, though they themselfs are aiming for Q2 2011, so we might see 28nm halfways though the year or so.

40nm til 2012 might mean we might have 3(!!) full generations of 40nm cards - unheard of in quite some time really

Actually that makes me wonder if AMD and Nvidia will turn another 40nm card around if 2012 is the earliest, or if both will stick around with what they have now

If they do turn out new cards, AMD has an advantage since none of their GPUs are > 400mm^2 while Nvidia is already sitting at ~520, which means they don't have a lot of room to get bigger - they'd have to hit optimizations and architecture changes hard

Nvidia cant push out a 3rd generation on 40nm... not without drastical changes, they have 520-529mm^2 cards and thats pushing the limits of whats economical feesable with reguards to size. A change in the proffessional markets, ei. AMD gaining some instead of just staying at 6%, could mean nvidias big chip stratagie falls apart.

I dont see a 3rd gen of cards on 40nm happending.

Also i don't think 32nm can be done by both sides unless Nvidia goes to globalfoundires and if then it could be able pump out a 32nm but i doubt that too.

I just hope its a rumor due to the fact globalfoundries has mentioned it could be able to get 28nm products by 2011 H1 (probably around june though) and even a delay will mean product would be Q4 at the most IMO unless it is a massive screw up or something.

I'm sure both companies will be looking to release new cards on 28nm in the late Autumn 2011. That might turn into very late 2011 if it doesn't go smoothly but I'd be surprised if it slips all the way to 2012.
