"looks" how much of it is dictated by the media?

the saying is, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. that there are really no absolute terms for what is "beautiful" and what isn't. ultimately beauty then can only be judged in terms of majority opinion.

so the question is, how is that opinion derived? if it familiarity? is it exposure? is it a favorable leaning because of the opinion of others?

look at the standards of beauty for women and look how they've changed.

another example, look at old classic cars and not so classic cars. look at all the cars from an era, if you weren't from that era and had no previous knowledge of that era, would you know which vehicles were considered attractive and which weren't?

It's still in the eye of the beholder. Just because reports, magazines, Entertainment shows, etc tell you who is the most beautiful... Doesn't mean I'll agree. Just means that in their eyes, that's who's the most beautiful.

The media can say who/what they think is the most beautiful all they want to try to influence you, but it's up to you to say if you agree or not. And most of the time I don't...

It's pretty obvious what is beautiful and what is not. If something is very pleasant to your eye, the chances are it's plesant to the eye of most other sane people. Take a rose, for example. I don't believe anyone can deem a rose ugly, for every aspect of a rose is indeed perfect.

People who read a lot / game a lot (otherwise don't watch tv) are the ones who overrate some women. A lot more are underrated because of their self-righteous thoughts about their perfect woman.

Just in terms of looks, it's easy to tell who's beautiful and who's avg / below avg if you have a large sample in your mind. It doesn't matter if they're shallow or have a lot of makeup on (short of looking like a clown).. they're still beautiful to the eye.

i never found roses that pretty. and i disagree, it's not so obvious.

i don't think that many of the girls people think are so hot on this forum are attractive at all.

again, take the example of cars, look back at pictures of cars from the '60's. if you didn't know which was which and which ones were popular at the time, how accurate do you think your guesses would be?

I can definitely agree with that arguement, because there's no standard. There are some people who like classics and some who don't. Personally I think some of the old fords (those bubble things) are terrifyingly ugly, but others' don't. When it comes to something man made, beauty is most definitely in the eye of the beholder.

maybe they just say they are hot to be nice.

as far as classic cars, it's a matter of taste. i think classic mustangs are absolutely beautiful, but anything else is "meh" to me.

i meant the actresses celebrity's they all drool over. particularly the girl that starred in "the girl next door". what do people see in her? or the girl that played in spiderman, i don't get it at all.

Most of the things that make a woman hot have to do directly with health. In shape, healthy skin, healthy hair, healthy nails, healthy teeth. Sure, once you get beyond that stuff it gets a little more difficult to judge, but I'd say most people have trouble just keeping up with the basics. I don't think what the media dictates changes that much either. I mean sure, women might go through fads where it's really in to be super skinny, but the hottest woman of xyz time period is still going to be the filled out healthy female, not the super skinny rail.

Cars usually come down to looking sleek and expensive. Yea, I know that is an over-generalization, but I'd say its true in most scenarios. Classic cars break this mold, but they are usually enjoyed simply for their uniqueness.

The girl that played in the girl next door has a great body and face.

Facial features. If everything is in equal proportions and the skin is smooth, chances are it's attractive. If you can't find a flaw, then why complain?
