Hey I currently have a 32" Vizio VW32L I believe. I recently moved and went from about a 4 foot viewing area to about a 10-15'. I have A couch about 15' directly in front of the tv and then another couch vertical to the tv with a viewing area from about 5' to 10'. I am wanting at least a 42" but would love bigger. I also want 1080p. I need HDMI, and DVI/VGA if possible. I also need at least 2 component. I am wanting to keep the budget at no more than $900 or $1,000. I was at Wal Mart tonight and saw a 50" Sanyo for $998 I think. I can get a 10% discount at walmart so would prefer to purchase there.

From 15' you may not see any difference between 1080p or 720p on a 42" set. If you want large, with your budget, I wouldn't rule out 720p (I.e. Vizio 42" Plasma at 747-10% discount).

Unless you have a Blu-ray player or a service that offers 1080p on demand, all of your video will be scaled regardless of your resolution.

480i --> 1080p or 720p
720p --> 1080p or no scaling with a true 720p set (I.e. not XXX x 768)
1080i --> 1080p or 720p

I have a Vizio 42" Plasma (the last model not the current) and sit 8' away and that is really too small. 50" would have been perfect for that distance. (no regrets as I still have my 100" 720p from 15')

Oh ok, yeah true, I don't have any blu ray player and nothing for 1080p except my xbox 360. Also I remember a while back an article about how to get discount displays from stores by asking for discountinued models or something. Any information on what you need to ask for?

I busted out a tape measure and the farther couch is 12' from where the tv will be and the other couch is 3' - 10'. I found this Westinghouse LTV46w1 46" LCD for $799 and free shipping it looks like the best option so far. I have never heard about WestingHouse LCDs before so am not too sure the build quality. I just read a review and it looks like it is a good tv. It doesn't have 1080p, would I notice a difference in 720p-1080p from 12'? Any other suggestions?

On my father's 42" Panasonic Plasma 720p looks great! I think 46-50" is in the gray area as to whether it really makes a difference or not. For 50" I would say go 1080p below that it will not make much of a difference between 720p and 1080p.

Ok awesome, well I think I am going to go with the LTV 46w1 then, does anyone have any information on if this is a good screen? Anyone ever had problems with Westinghouse?

At that size and price range the Sony S4100 isn't a bad set. Does pretty much everything you are asking for and had image quality on par with the Samsung 500 series for slightly less cash. I know Wal*Mart stocks them at the stores around ehre and has a pretty competitive price on them. 3 HMDI's, 2 component(will accept 1080P over component as well), VGA in and you could use DVI with a simple $5 DVI/HDMI cord from monoprice. The set takes a little while to "warm up" when you turn it on, but it is something I've gotten used to. Personally, it wasn't the set I wanted but given my circumstances (warranty replacement of another set that is no longer in production) I'm satisfied with it.

Oh wow well thats not good, I'll look around and see if I see any similar stories. I looked on wal marts website for the s4100 and it looks like it is around $1,200? That is a bit out of my price range. I am really hoping to not spend any more than $900 and at the most $1,000. I am selling my current Vizio VW32L for $300 probably.

I just bought an insignia 47" 1080p LCD from Best Buy for $900 + another $100 for a blue ray player. Its normally $1k but I scored an open box deal. It has all the standard inputs including VGA and the picture looks pretty good to me. I looked at the Sanyo at Walmart but it doesn't have any computer input, not a big deal, but I figured if I can get 1080p for the same price I might as well. Plus the sanyo's casing is kind of ugly.

Yeah I agree on the casing being ugly. I didn't even notice it not having pc input. How do you find out about open box items usually? Do you just have to ask about them or what? I found what I think is a pretty good deal on craigslist today. I am going tomorrow to see it. It is This TV with a 4 year warranty and This TV Stand for $1,000. I know Samsung is pretty good for LCDs. I have never even looked at DLPs before, I know they have to have bulbs changed every once in a while. Anyone have any information on this tv?

viewing angles on DLP's are not good. Picture should be excellent at correct angle with TV at the correct height. I personally wouldn't buy one, but they can have a great picture in the right room and you can get very large screens for very little money.

Ended up picking up a 65" DLP Toshiba with stand today for $900, and so far it is perfect! It is a huge upgrade over my 32"

Yeah it looks amazing. I can tell it is a couple years old though, and I wish it was 1080P. But other than that it is a great set for $900.

It's true what people say, whatever size you get, you will end up wishing for a bigger TV. I got a 46-inch LCD HDTV (1080P) which was a big upgrade from my 27-inch tube TV. I sit about 6-8 feet away from it and find myself wishing for a 50 or 52-inc for movies. For regular TV viewing it still seems fine.
