Question Looking to upgrade my GTX 970 SSC

Hi everyone! Long time member but didn't posted in some years.
I'm currently looking to upgrade my GPU and was looking at the Radeon RX 5000 series.

I currently have an EVGA GTX 970 SSC (the one with coil whine from many years ago). It's still doing it's job but the whine is getting annoying since I started using my computer a bit more.

My current system is in my signature!

I was tempted by the RX 5600 XT Gaming X. I've been out of the loop for so many years I think I skipped 2 or 3 generations of components.

Considering my system above, would a 5600 XT be a nice upgrade for an old system like mine?

Given how close we are to the next generation of cards being released, I would STRONGLY encourage waiting unless your current card is completely dead. Almost everything points to this generation being a major increase in GPU performance due to finally having a new process node for manufacturing the cards. I would not be surprised by a 40-50% performance increase over the current generation of cards (in other words, if that holds across the line, it would be the difference of having the power of an Nvidia 2080 for the price of the 2060). And to top it off, we will most likely see HDMI 2.1 in this generation of cards, and possibly Displayport 2.0 (not holding my breath on Displayport 2.0 though).

5600 XT would be a big upgrade from a GTX 970. Your PSU is fine, the power consumption is nearly the same. And your CPU should be adequate depending on the game. Some games are more CPU dependent, but most still run ok with what you have.

New GPU's are coming later this year, so there may be faster cards for that price point, but if you want a card now, the 5600 XT is a pretty good card for its price point. You may want to look at the Sapphire 5600 XT Pulse.

I'd just stick it out with your 970. It's what I would have done had my 970 not died and it kind of made me sick getting another card with how garbage this generation is for the price.

If you don't go next gen, grabbing a GTX 1080ti or RTX 2070 should be easier on the wallet when everyone else upgrades... just another reason to hold out a bit longer

if you 100% need a new graphics card right now, I would think chances are, a 2070S would age significantly better than a 5700xt.

but, as others have said, this is bad timing for a a GPU upgrade, specially for someone that kept the 970 for years, better wait for the new gen of hardware that is coming out later this year.

The OP was looking at a 5600XT, not a 5700XT. The 2070S is way more expensive than a 5600XT.
