Looking to upgrade my computer and a friends computer

My Computer:
1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

This PC will primarily be for gaming (BF2142, Crysis, CoD4, etc), web surfing, basic office apps, and maybe some basic video editing if I ever get motivated.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

About 1000

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

USA

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc, etc, etc, you get the picture.

No real preference but currently in favor of Intel and nVidia.

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

I would like to re-use my case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16811112040

My question I have about this case is if anyone knows if this case can handle the XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler. I measured my case and I have approximately 171mm from the motherboard tray stand-offs to the side panel. I do not know how high the CPU and socket stand off the motherboard. Or should I go with the 92mm version? I would like to overclock and try and go past the 3.6gig mark if possible.

I will like to re-use my X-fi extreme music card. I have been thinking about going to Vista x64, will this sound card work Vista x64?

I will like to re-use my powersupply: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article208-page1.html
Will this have enough power to power my new potential rig below?

I will re-use my hard drives: 70 gig raptor and 2 250 gig sata drives.

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.

Yes. I have taken most of my picks from the threads in this forum.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

Yes, I would like to overclock the system, possibly higher than 3.6 if the CPU can go higher (this is why I would like to get a 120mm CPU cooler.)

8. WHEN do you plan to build it?

ASAP. 😀

Here is what I am thinking for my computer:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80570E8400 $199
Cooling: XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler $36.99
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L (P35) - $87
Memory: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory $76.99

Since I would like to try and go beyond the 3.6 overclock mark if possible, what would be a good 2 x 2 DDR2 1000 memory?

Video Card: GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB (PCIe), 8800 GTX, or 9800 GTX.

I don?t plan on upgrading the video card for awhile so I want something that lasts. I also decided against SLI.

CD/DVD-ROM: LITE-ON Black 20X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 20X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA DVD Burner with LightScribe

I like that this has both color front panels in case I change cases down the road. Is this a decent CD/DVD-ROM?

Operating System: Vista x64.

This will be my first crack at using/installing Vista x64. With the release of SP1 have the drivers finally come up to speed or will I have issues with my old software/hardware.

My Friends Computer: (he only surfs the web and does office app type of stuff)

CPU: E2160
Cooling: stock cooler (can this overclock at all or should I get the XIGMATEK HDT-S1283)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L (P35) - $87
Memory: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory $76.99

Everything else will be carry over parts.

Thanks for any help/advice in advance. I am very eager to put in the order tonight or first thing tomorrow.

If he only surfs the web and uses office apps he doesn't really need 4GB, but it won't hurt anything either. As far as the graphics for your setup I'd go with the 8800GTS. I think you mean 512MB though?

If you want to overclock it past 3.6GHz, get DDR2-1000.
E2160 can overclock on stock cooler just fine. The temps might be a little high for some people's taste, but it's doable. I hit 2.7GHz (50% increase) on stock cooler.

If you're using a 4-year old scanner and printer, or an ancient PCI modem, don't expect to get digitally signed drivers for them. Otherwise, enjoy Vista x64.

4GB DDR2-1000 $90 http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231145

If it's true that your friend "only surfs the web and does office app type of stuff"... BUY A DELL!! Or else you'll end up spending too much building an overkill system, and even worse; you'll be his tech support for ever.

That is funny that you mention that I will be his PC support forever, because it is true. LOL

But part of the reason I agree to work on his computer is because he buys my old video cards which saves me some money. 😀

Otherwise I would tell him to get a Dell.

Would anyone with the Cooling: XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler
be willing to take a measurement of the total height from the top of the motherboard to the very top of the cooler and give me to total height? I am worried that this cooler will not fit in my case.

Thanks,

Gixxer
