Looking to upgrade. Don't really need to, just bored w/current crap.

Yeah, a true 1st world dilemma.

First, I game a tad but mostly strategy and RPG's, no FPS's.

Also do some 3D on this and some video editing...nothing major, but it's there.

Now, my old components:

Intel 2600k @ 4.6GHz on 1.3V

16GB Corsair Dominator GT 2133

250GB Intel 510 SSD, OS drive, and WD 1TB Black (storage)

Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z motherboard (1st Gen...not PCIe 3.0 compliant, dammit!)

Gigabyte 7970 video card

Corsair HX850 power supply

Cpu is "custom" watercooled....HK 3.0 cpu block, two DDC2 pumps in series, a Thermochill 120.3 and a Feser 240 rads.

Have had the setup for some time now and am just going blind from boredom.....have the upgrade itch once again.

I want to get at least a new motherboard that's PCIe 3.0 compliant. But as far as I understand it, that means I have to upgrade the cpu, also, even if I upgrade the motherboard to something comparable to what I have, like the Z77 Asus Maximus V Gene, I'd still have to move to an IVB cpu to get PCIe 3.0 to work, right?

ANd then there's the Microcenter sale on socket 2011 motherboards with a 3820 cpu. While only partially unlocked, that cpu can get up to around 4.6GHz or better, so wouldn't lose any speed, but again, will PCIe 3.0 work on it? I've heard/read varying beliefs on this.

So, terminal upgraditis has hit....again. IVB or SB-E? Figure the SB-E upgrade will cost a little more than the IVB uprade will after selling my leftovers.

Thoughts?

So, already purchased a PC Labs QMicra mATX case (used but looks darned near new....thanks PClark99!)

You have a pretty damn stacked system already and I'm not seeing a strong use case for PCIe 3.0. I recommend a new hobby. :awe:

You'd think that, but already have a motorcycle and have nothing more to get for it, a Cannondale road bike and just finished a minor upgrade on it, spent all I want on my cars right now, and my home theater system has mostly new parts from last year. I do have some $$ to spend on my boat, but overall it's in good shape for the upcoming season....so, this leaves the computers (all four desktops) to toy with.

The bad part is I've already bought over the last few months a new power supply-a Corsair AX750, radiator-an Alphacool ST30, a new cpu block-a Koolance 370, and the aforementioned used but near perfect QMicra mATX case. So I'm ready for a new mb and cpu.....memory is fairly new, SSD is in for the long haul, video card is fairly new.

So, if I need a new hobby, what would you suggest? I've done scuba diving and not into that right now, no interest in flying (too darned expensive), done stamps & coins (although we do have a bit of a collection of silver proofs in individual coins and sets), not into gardening, climbing, skydiving, etc., etc.

What do you have for displays? Could be another direction to go.

Or, if you just want a way to throw money away, get into photography.

It sounds like you have quite a bit of disposable income.

Maybe make a donation to a school for the purchase of technology? I teach at a middle school and it's hard to keep pace with computer tech on a public school budget.

personally, find something new, even a hoilday as upgrading is not going to see anything worth while.

If you do upgrade and want to keep that mATX case, IVY is the path. The number of mATX boards for s2011 is well less than 5 looking at my local stores (one store carries none).

Only other option that comes to mind would be to build your own case, but seeing as you have a mATX case to use, building one is proberly not high on your list.

What sort of monitor do you have? If you got money to spend, buy a nice Dell 30" 2560x1600 IPS panel.

 to both of these if you want to keep it computer related.

On the other hand, I am surprised that you are happy with the state of your boat. If you look up "boat" in the dictionary, you'll see the following definition: "a hole in the water that you pour money into". :awe:

Thats a kickass system. But since it is used I'll give ya 50$ for it, deal?

Since you have money to burn, why not read up on saving and investing money? That way you'll have even more money to burn later in life! Or lose it all.

Other things you can try: weightlifting, volunteer work, human-cyborg relations, digital photography, muggle studies, ham radio, pyramid construction schemes, ukulele operation, underwater weaving methodologies, mime rehabilitation, moisture farming, going outside, sleestak relocation services.
