Looking to start playing piano

tweakmm

Are there any good web resources? Any good books? I already play cello and can read bass cleff and I could learn to read treble fairly easily....

I tried to learn guitar from books for six years but made twenty times the progress from taking classes. Usually I'm quite good at learning from books and I was in chorus for years (I know how to read music)... it just seems that to learn how to play an actual instrument I need someone to show me the ropes... know what I mean?

the Old Town School of Folk is where I take guitar... I don't think they offer piano....

Are you wanting to start classical piano, then?

Having a teacher would really help. How much do you know? Do you know the notes on the keyboard already?

To build up finger strength, finger technique etc. the classic choice is by Hannon, I think it's called 'The virtuoso pianist', the only book the guy ever wrote. That's strictly exercises though.

Czerny also wrote a book of exercises for the piano that get progressively harder, it's used pretty commonly.

There's also a series of books called 'Dozen a Day' that starts at the real basics. You probably already have enough of an affinity to music from cello to skip a lot of the easiest stuff.

I've not found nor have I looked for web resources for classical. But IMO, if you have the money, I'd definitely go with lessons.

^^ what he said. Get a teacher if you want to, but if your on a budget get a book. I've been playing since i was 4, well worth it.

Get a teacher. I'm serious. I know around here, you can find college piano majors who will give lessons for $15 bucks an hour.

Whether or not you already have experience with musical instruments, I'd recommend getting a teacher. You can probably find one for cheap if you check with a local music store (sometimes they have bulletin boards, etc) or maybe even classes at a local CC.

heh. I can't beleive you want to play piano, lol!

learn guitar.

i know the following instraments:

piano

clarinet

sax

guitar

bass guitar

the reason i want to start playing piano is I already have one. I really really want to play bass guitar, but I cant really afford one right now. I might start learning guitar soon(because i can convince my mom to buy me an accoustic one 😉)

Desperate college students will do many things for $15 an hour....🙂

In any case, I grew up on the Hanon and Czerny guys. They offer some of the best technical practice books ever. But as far as musical expression, interpretation, etc. I didn't get any of that until I went to a teacher.

Self-practice can only get you so far...unless you are gifted in music. Even then, I can imagine it would be difficult.

I already play/have played guitar/bass/drums, and my mom has a wonderful baby grand to practice on when I go home. Plus I've always enjoyed classical music. And why the hell didn't I think of posting for college music students! :|

try to get an old Miracle Piano - its software and a keyboard that plug into your computer, teaches you how to play the piano
my daughter taught herself how to play piano quite nicely! (she already plays violin) this is not bullsh#t.
