Looking to start casual biking

Hey ATers

I don't know if this is the correct forum for this, but I've recently developed a small but noticeable (to me) midsection (and abhor running), so I'm looking to start biking around town instead of driving.

I imagine I can buy a used, cheap bicycle for this purpose, but I was wondering if I could get any specific information on a bike that would be a good choice for me. Not looking to do any cross-country treks or mountain biking, just a simple secondary transportation vehicle. I've heard that if you go into a bike shop not knowing what you're talking about, you'll get looked down upon, I'd like to avoid that.

Thanks.

Just find a used street bike on a classified site. Though, it's probably stolen.

Find out what your price range is, do some research on what kind of riding you want to do, find a bike that fits you well, then buy it.

Also, while I respect your desire to bike to work, might I also suggest rowing or swimming? Both great exercises and would probably help in combination with cycling.

This but I'm not sure how you can do it without talking to some knowledgeable people, like at a bike shop. If you're not comfortable on it, it'll collect dust.
