Hey all,

My current build is in my sig. Looking to replace the cpu/mobo/RAM and keep everything else, and possibly put an H60 water cooling system in also. Looking to purchase a low cost upgrade for doing a bit of gaming ( SC2, Portle 2) and sometimes I do some video encoding. Looking at the Phenom II X2 Asus M5A87 and unlock the CPU. Probably go with G.skill 2x2GB of memory, although the 2x4GB isn't all that much more pricey. Is this upgrade worth it?

I'd start bidding on an ebay Qxxxx. Probably could get one for 70-80 bucks. You would keep the same mobo and ram. No sense in replacing those just to get a single threaded downgrade in the Phenom II. The socket 775 quads might not make it to 3.4GHz, but the 2 extra cores are most likely all you need.

Yes I also was thinking that could be a possible route as well. Perhaps then I should just wait a bit longer to stack up more $$$ and buy an i5-2400? I am looking to get a decent fps out of SC2. Not sure if my 4890 can even give over 30FPS with max settings on 1900x1280. Perhaps then I am better off going with a Qxxxx and a GTX460 and OC them both?

Edit: Looked on newegg.. Q8400 ~$185. Could get the X2 and mobo for ~$187.. just saying.

Also, I am trying to future proof a bit here, too. I dont want to spend $185 now, just to spend 300-400 in a year or two to upgrade off LGA775. Perhaps spending a little extra for LGA1155 with an i3-2100? Then if I feel the need, I could pony up for an i7-2600 or similar?

I would want 2 really fast cores for SC2. You should pawn off your current pc since it is not really optimized for SC2, but it would make a great pc for most gaming. Thus it still has decent resale value.

I could sell it probably for ~$400 or so? If I did make a new build on Intel platform, it would look like this:

i3-2100
GA-Z68X-UD3
2x2GB Ripjaw
H60 Water cooling system
GTX460
550VX
1.5TB Deskstar 7K3000
HAF912
24X DVD Burner

~$767.91 and leaves room for upgrades.

With a i3 2100 and that HAF912 case you wouldn't need the H60 as that CPU runs fairly cool and that Case is pretty spaceous with good cable management.

Of course you could be like me and get it just because it looks coo:sneaky:l

+1 to the looking cool.

And I plan to OC this somewhat just because it's fun to tinker..
