Not a big difference with most movies.

From what I understand, effective use of surrounds is becoming much more common on the HD movie discs but most of the time on regular material the surrounds don't even do that much.
The vast majority of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray discs don't have 7.1 sound. You could probably count the number that do on two hands. So, for now, I wouldn't bother with 7.1, unless you've got some very specific source material in mind - which, for the moment, are first-party PS3 games.

That said, DD+/TrueHD/DTS-HD HR/DTS-HD MA are worthwhile in a receiver because of the higher bitrates that these formats support. You should be able to hear something of a difference with decent speakers.

I was talking about use of surrounds in general rather than rears specifically. I'm saying that even effective use of 5.1 (vs. 3.1) is rather rare, so above 5.1 is even less significant.

Oh, I'm totally in agreement there. I was only putting in the context of the quote before yours, where he's not sure if 7.1 is worth it - and the answer is almost always no right now. I'd leave some space for those rears, but I wouldn't buy them for now. So, we agree.
