Looking to lay out some cash on upgrades? read this!

I just came accross (again) an OLD article by JonnyGURU about the nature of the performance arms race and spending cash to keep up. Apart from the specific technology references, it still hits the nail on the head...

Article: Like No Other Industry

Enjoy!

"2. If you wait for the next best thing to come out to buy "it", the next, next best thing will be coming out next month."

😀 That article speaks the truth! Exactly why I gave up waiting for PCI Express for AMD last month and bit the bullet on a new system. I've gotten my money's worth and then some out of my antique Pentium II 266MHz that's been running since '98. If I'd kept waiting for the latest & greatest I'd never get a new system.

Funny, but true! I see computers as a hobby, however. They're more than just appliances to me (and a lot of other people on this forum). He drew an analogy to people that tune cars - which are even more insane. The amount of money that some people pour into their cars is MUCH more than I've dumped into my computer hobby.

As far as upgrading to the best thing... I rarely do that. 🙂 In regards to video cards, I'll usually wait until my video card is 3 generations behind and then upgrade 2 generations. Then again, I don't game nearly as much as I used to.

ATI came out with the 9700 pro in August of 2002. It's almost 2005 now, and the 9700 pro can still play every game on the market, and play them well. 1200x1600 with AA and AF at 60 FPS? No. But it can still make Doom 3 look very pretty on a large monitor. And Doom 3 is by far the most graphically demanding game now, or in the foreseeable future.

Yes, they've made faster cards since then. Guess what? You don't have to buy them to play all the new games.

You don't think that games today are better than the games of the 80s? Fine, go play Super Mario Bros. while I play HL2 and Far Cry (both will run beautifully on a 9700 pro btw)

I just don't understand people that complain about the advance of technology. Nobody has to participate, heck, right now I'm downloading a linux OS to install on a 5 year old Aptiva. Then I'm going to install open office, and guess what? It will be perfectly functional as a basic work pc.

Like burning CDs? What about multitasking? Playing music through your pc as you work? Editing, and printing digital photos that are just as sharp as 35mm? watching DVDs? how about having your road trip mapped out in seconds right in front of your eyes, or doing your income taxes in seconds? I understand that you don't need a cutting edge system for any of these things, but guess what? Not too long ago, they were cutting edge. As hardware and software gets better, we're only going to find more useful applications for PCs. Yeah, 90% of it will be word processing and browsing, but the other 10% will be excellent and worth it.

Man. I can't believe you guys dug up that old relic. I think I wrote that on the back of the Declaration of Independence. :-/

People upgrade more to keep up with the joneses than out of necessity, then they blame the industry rather than the joneses or their own levelheadedness. My ti4600 can push current games in 10x7 with med-high settings and it's about 3 years old. I only upgraded (and only to a 9800pro) because the HTPC I built needed a video card.
