I'm looking to get a suit in the next few months for interviewing. I'd also like it if it could be used for other formal occassions such as weddings, funerals, who knows... But hopefully I'll only have to wear it once every few years on average, until I'm dead.

What stores should I look into? Macys, Mens Warehouse, etc.

What style should I get?

How much can I expect to spend?

My first suit I bought in college for 200 bucks, kinda crappy overall at some local shop.

After working a few years, I wen to Mens Warehouse. Ended up costing me about 700 bucks for a pair of pants, shoes, belt, 2-3 shirts, two ties, two coats, and everything custom tailored. Not too bad considering what I got. The color I picked is black, so I can use it for everything from job interviews to funerals to weddings. This suit fits MUCH better and looks MUCH better than my 200 dollar suit.

I like my new suit much better, but at the time, the 200 dollar suit did what i needed it to.

1 blue

1 gray

that should suffice for a while...depending on the job you might not want to wear the same suit to the 2nd, 3rd, 4th interview...

Go to a suit warehouse like 3 day suit brokers in CA...keep in mind that the tailoring will cost almost as much as the suit....unless you're busting out the 2K armani...

Probably get some decent 2 suits, 3 shirts,,ties...the package deal for 500 bucks....and the tailoring will be 200-300 depending on what they need oto do

and IMO single breasted 3 button...unless you're a pimp then you can do double breasted....double breasted looks goofy when unbuttoned...

Heh, if you pay for shipping, you can have my practically brand new Kenneth Cole suit. I bought it last year and wore it to a few weddings and a couple interviews. I tried the jacket on the other day and it was extremely small on me.

then i recommend you check Burlington Coat Factory outlet as your first stop
they have nice suits, but they are out of season or whatever, leftovers and really cheap, from $40-$200. basically up to 90% off the "retail" price

i got a suit there for my grandma's funeral for $40 last february, its a $200 suit

it is hit/miss, you just have to see if they have something in your size that you like

Pft, I got a pinstriped Ralph Lauren suit for $150 once. Department stores are for suckers unless you're getting a serious sale. I user Kohls and private taylors for all of my clothes shopping. The only time I ever bought a piece of clothing from a department store was a cashmere topcoat for $200 that retails for $500 MSRP. Could have had it from amazon for $300.

All of my suits are black or black pinstriped. I don't like blue and grey...

yes,if you are just going to own one suit, get something conservative that will fit weddings, funerals and job interviews

very light pinstripping is ok, but nothing flashy for a one suit guy

JC Penney has decent suits, especially for just casual wear. Their Stafford brand aren't bad. They'll run you $150 - $250 or so.

I would also investigate Men's Wearhouse. They talk a good game, but I've never seen their merch.

Personally, I would go charcoal gray with a stripe.

So if/when I find a suit I like, how am I supposed to tell if its a piece of crap or not?

If you want to educate yourself, I'd suggest that you first to to a tailor and just find the asshole expensive suits. Feel the materal. Look at the stiching. Ask to try on a jacket in your size. Then go to Kmart/Value City/Walmart and look at their suits. Do the same. See how much cheaper the stiching is? See how fake, tacky and pastic-ly the fabric feels? See how it feels like if you tug the sleeves the wrong way, you'll have a hole in the armpit?

There are some crapy expensive suits and there are some great $150-200 suits if you know where to shop. As a rule, I would never buy a suit who's shelf/sale price was under $150.

Kohls has some descent stuff that's machine tailored. YMMV because they have some junk too. Generally anything you buy at a private tailor or a Men's Warehouse will be of reasonable or very good quality, but you'll pay a lot for it. Note that these are the suits you get alterations done to.

Look and see if the tag says Menswarehouse on it.

A couple tips - get a suit that's wool or almost all wool. Nothing tips off a cheap suit like the sheen of a polyester blend. Also pay close attention to the shoulders to make sure it's a right fit. A cheap but well-fitting wool suit will go a long way.

It gets a lot worse than Men's Warehouse man....

Men's Warehouse is pretty middle-shelf IMHO. Expensive, but middle-shelf.

But, you can pay a little more and get a Jos Banks, Corbin, or Brooks Brothers suit which is much much higher quality.
I can't imagine paying $200 for a cheap looking suit from menswarehouse, when for $300 you can get a suit which, with a good taylor will fit well, and rap much much better.

Shipping, plus a meal. We should go to Mendy's. I'd recommend the swordfish. Best swordfish in the city.

The best.

Unless you want to get just the soup.
