Looking to get a big screen HDTV(52"-60") for football season.

Very little knowledge on the difference betwen the 2 and I'm too lazy to search the AVS forum.

I know DLP been out for a while but I heard the light bulbs die quite often.
LCD projection is fairly new.

2 main questions I have ??

1) Just from purely picture quality, which one is better.
2) Is it worth the extra money to get a 1080p( 1920 × 1080 )

I'm mainly looking at 2 sets from Costco.
One is a Sony 60" LCD projection for $2399
Other is a Toshiba 62'(or 60"?) DLP but its 1080p for $2799.

Sorry I forgot the model.

1080P isn't really worth the extra money right now. I've read that while BR and HDDVD content is 1080P, almost no player can output it, and most TVs interlace a 1080i signal to 1080p.

As for DLP vs LCD.... it'll mainly be up to your eyes. DLP can have rainbows due to the colorwheel(but this is getting better as more mfgs use colorwheels with more sections that spin faster), LCD has "screen door effect", where it looks like everything is on the other side of, obviously, a screen door. ;) It's really dependent on which you can see, and which bothers you more. I think the rainbows and having to replace the bulb every 2-3 years is worth it over SDE, for me.

bulb life should be about the same for DLP vs. LCD (projection), 2+ years for heavy use, longer for light use. Pay with a CC that doubles warranty and your first 2 years are covered.

No idea which is better for football, and whether you can even get football channels in 1080i instead of 720p. What do you have for cable or satellite?

I'll mostly likely be buying from Costco so warranty won't matter that much.

I know 1080p is not very common right now but I'm planning to have this Tv for 5yrs ?? so would 1080p be worth it for the future ??

I guess I'm more concern which is better in picture quality.
Anyone have a definately answer ??

The lifespan of the bulb is really a wash between standard LCD and DLP rear projection TVs.

I picked a DLP set because I wasn't affected by the "rainbow" issue and I was more concerned with screen door effect. I think DLPs have a "smoother" picture than LCDs, and they have better black levels.

I didn't go with a 1080P set; it honestly wasn't an issue for me, all the high-definition material I watch looks fantastic.

And I paid $1299 for a 56" Panasonic DLP; absolutely loaded (2 HDMI, 3 Component, 15-Pin D-Sub, Built-In HDTV Tuner, SD Card Reader). You can probably find a better deal than the examples you have given.

I'd highly recommend this guy for your budget. Beautiful picture! OneCall also has great prices for extended warranties, if you are interested. Also note, you most likely won't have to pay tax, which for a $2700-2800 set could be a considerable amount. You'll have to pay shipping, but that should be quite a bit cheaper than tax.

If you have the money and want to get a projection TV, go with the Sony SXRD-- it's absolutely the best picture quality you will find in a rear-view projection TV.

Outside of that, the subject of whether LCD or DLP rear projection is best is really a matter for YOU to decide-- some people swear by one technology while loathing the other. I myself had a Sony RPTV LCD TV last year for football-- and like most HDTVs found that hi-def programming looked stunning while standard-def programming was ho-hum. I've said this a thousand times before, but if it wasn't for football being in HD, I wouldn't even own an HDTV as I just couldn't justify the extra cost for little added benefit.

If your favorite team is usually broadcast on Fox, you will be in HD heaven. On the other hand, if your favorite team is a chump team who typically plays on CBS I'd venture and say less than half of the games you'll see will be broadcast in HD.

DLP, don't go with LCd because you can't get this size yet.

1080P. Don't compromise. because I didn't compromise for that, I had to get the 46" Sony XBR2 LCD. Parents kinda wanted a 50" DLP, but I pushed for the LCD.

I forget to mention one thing.
I bought the Vizio plasma 42" a few months earlier and I'm not happy with it.
I am taking it back to Costco with the intention to get a bigger screen.

So buying elsewhere isn't an option for me.
Plus I also like the piece of mind buying from Costco.

i just picked up the 62" toshiba from costco today..:)

had the 62" mitsubishi (62526) for about 2 months but I brought it back today because it seemed to stutter more on DVD's where the screen had alot of action or movement...it didn't bother me too much, but the screen door effect was noticeable every now and then also...

really happy with the Toshiba picture...running the cable card right now and the picture is pretty sweet...XBOX 360 is very nice as well...haven't run the DVE disk yet either...

only two complaints I have are the POP feature only allows the left window to show ANT1/ANT2/VID1/VID2 inputs and the right window can only display HDMI1/HDMI2/Component1/Component2 inputs which means you can't watch 2 channels at the same time unless you have converter box feeding into in the right window (hope that makes sense)

the other which is pretty minor is the remote is fugly - black remote with silver sides...will take pics shortly...

EDIT: the model number is HM116 which doesn't come up on Toshiba's website or google...

everything was fine yesterday...having some major problems with it today...

I did the setup for the TV Guide yesterday and it takes up to 24 hours to aquire the guide data.

When I got home tonight and turned on the TV, I am getting snow on all of my analog channels and low/no signal on my digitial channels (using Time Warner cable).

It looks like the TV Guide data screwed up the TV. (I ran an RG6 cable from another cable outlet in the house that is working to the Toshiba and it still did not display any channels)...

still deciding right now if I want to exchange this for another unit or just get a refund. :(
