Avoid the Bombay Sapphire. Yuck!

I like a good dry gin with not a lot of botanicals and to me Bombay is overpowering.

Since he likes Gin & Tonics I say you buy him a handle of the Tanqueray for $30. Sure the Tanqueray Ten is better but after 2 its not like he will know the difference.

Another one of my favorite gin's and comes in at 90 proof.

Another vote for Bombay Sapphire. I no longer drink it but it's the only gin I ever really liked.

In contrast to the above statement, I find Boodles and Tanqueray to be too sweet.

Since I know he likes Tanqueray, I'm going with Tanqueray Ten
I don't want to get him something he doesn't like

Does anyone how much a 750 mL bottle of Tanqueray Ten goes for at a liquor store? Because online I have seen prices go from $25 - $40

Thanks again!

I think the last bottle I bought was $22 or $23

Typically 28-31 bucks depending on where you live versus the 17.99-19.99 of regular Tanqueray.

Sapphire, as far as gift-quality spirit goes...is kind of ghetto, imo.

I would recommend Hendrick's, for something awesome and unique, or Boodles, for a premium simple gin.

I've never liked G&T made with Sapphire. Boodles makes a damn fine Martini.

mixing a premium booze with something just boggles me.

i keep two rums. one myers dark rum i mix with pepsi. the other is my 12 year old Zaya rum that i sip straight up out of a old fashioned glass.

in fact having a glass or two of Zaya tonight sounds very good.

I recommend the Tang Ten for a gift. It's a special occasion thing for me. Usually I'll make my martinis with Bombay Sapphire unless I treat myself to a gift and get a fifth of Tang Ten instead of the handle of Sapphire -- they are about the same price at the stores around here (Around $40).

You can do better than Sapphire.

Hendrick's has a light cucumber flavor. Citadelle is smooth and more floral. I'd rather drink both straight or in a martini rather than in a gin n tonic though - they're on the delicate side.

If you want something strong, try Junipero. Very big.

So I while I was showering I was wondering, if this is going to be mixed should I bother going with Tanqueray Ten or should I just get 2x Tanqueray London Dry Gin?

Completely depends, Tanq London is more suitable for mixing but if he'd appreciate the nicer bottle anyway it doesn't much matter.

Recently I have been working on a bottle of Old Raj which I highly recommend.
I would drink Magellan over Bombay Sapphire at the same price point.
For the best value I would go with Tanqueray Ten.

http://most-expensive.net/gin

Gin is made by flavoring pure grain alcohol with juniper berries and other natural flavors. While it hasn’t been as popular in mixed drinks as vodka, gin has made something of a comeback in recent years. It’s no surprise, then, that the most expensive gin bottle in the world was produced in 2008.

Bombay Spirits Co.’s Bombay Sapphire brand of gin is flavored with almond, lemon peel, liquorice, orris root, angelica, coriander, cassia, cubeb, grains of paradise and, of course, juniper berries. When Bombay Spirits teamed up with jewelers Baccarat and Garrard and designer Karim Rashid, the result was Revelation.

Five Revelation bottles were created—each one a handmade crystal bottle topped with a bejeweled stopper with a sapphire centerpiece. The collection was unveiled at Garrard’s in London and then sold at five different airports.

Each bottle had a price of $200,000.

I'm not a big gin drinker, but I like Bombay Sapphire. It has a nice flavor, and the bottle's attractive. The Hendricks looks interesting though. Imo, presentation adds to the gift, Bottle, box, label... They all add to the presentation. Based on that, I'd lean towards the Hendricks. Even though you don't know if he'd like it, it has an attractive package, is well regarded, isn't cheap, and is apparently unique. It would be a good choice so your buddy can try it out without taking the risk himself. It might be a new favorite for him, and if not, he knows you were thinking of him, and gave him what you thought would be the best gift.

Tanqueray Ten is good, much better than their normal stuff.

If he likes blue gins then find him some Magellan. It is a true blue gin, unlike Bombay Sapphire that just comes in a blue tinted bottle.

Excellent suggestions...

For Gin and Tonics, Tanqueray No. 10 is great. Tanqueray Rangpur makes great G&T due to its heavy emphasis on lime. Both can be had from 22-30$ depending on your area.

Tanqueray No. 10 tastes excellent straight and up w/o vermouth.

I typically leave Bombay Sapphire for Dirty Martini's.

Hendrick's is a good Gin, but it is 30+$ and is a bit different since it is infused with rose and cucumber.

Since all of the mentioned Gin's taste completely different (due to the different botanicals used), they are all capable of being mixed for different end results, some better than others.

For gifting purposes, i think a "coolness" factor gives the gifted liquor a little boost. Certainly a Magellen or Tanq No 10 have pretty neat color/bottles respectively.
