Looking to buy a router...

I have a cable internet connection and this computer that I need to network with my Playstation 2 for broadband on it. I just bought a hub and me knowing nothing about networking, thought it would work until I was clued in by my friend that only routers did that. I'm looking to stay under $100 and I got this hub for about $50. What brand & model would you suggest for a router? Linksys seems to rule the router area but my friend I mentioned before had one and he eventually pissed on it and threw it against a tree then burned it since it caused him so much stress. I don't know if it was the router itself or he just got frustrated too soon. Well, give me your two bits on this and it'd be appreciated.

I say get to ebay asap and find any router with a brand name and get it new. I have a Siemens that I bought from circuit city (retail electronics store) and it works perfectly. Only 60-70 bucks and comes with a print server! ....incase you're thinking linksys...good choice...but more expensive...I guarantee it....at least retail-wise 🙂 It comes with 4 RJ45 lan ports and 1 RJ45 wan port. Of course...the WAN port just hooks up to your cable modems RJ45 port with a simple patch cable. Should be cake from there!
Good luck ~

i have the link BEFSR41 V.2 router and it is VERY good. The only problem i had was when i first got it the connection dropped sometimes, but i updated the firmware and the problems went away. Had no other problems what so ever. I think u should definetly get the V.2, as i head problems about the first version.

it really is plug and play. I didn't belive people when they told me that, but u just plug everything in and it works (well maybe cause i have xp on all machines but you know) *shurg*

Poop. I just bought a 20' Cat5 cable to run to the Playstation 2, do I have to convert to RJ45? What's the difference and is that how routers all work, through RJ45? Like I said, I don't know crap about networking. But eBay is out of the question, I've won too much stuff off there and my parent's are getting kind of pissed.

And the MAIN reason I'm doing this is so I can share this with my PLAYSTATION 2 and it will share my cable internet connection, right? The hub couldn't do that which is why I'm returning it but should I keep the (accidentally bought) RJ45 connector to extend the wires if I'll be converting to RJ45? I'm not sure what sort of wire the Playstation 2's network adapter can handle.

Here is what the manual on the Playstation 2's network card reads:

"Do not connect network and telephone cables of the following type...(For the broadband)

-Network cables of types other than 100Base-TX and 10Base-T

..."

So, what're 100Base-TX and 10Base-T cables? Do RJ45 and Cat5 work the same?

CAT5 is the cable type. RJ45 is the jack type. If you look at the connectors, you notice they are bigger than the ones on phone wires. The bigger jack is RJ45, the one on phone wires is called RJ11. That being said, you don't have to buy another cable. Just make sure that it is a straight-through patch cable. You can tell by facing the jack towards you, the push down part on the bottom. It should be brown/white, brown, green/white, blue... from left to right.

The Playstation 2 should have an RJ45 connector. I'm not really sure though since I don't have one...too poor 😉

The cable that you have should be 100BaseTX. There are some gigabit cables now that are 1000BaseTX. That's probably what they mean not to use.

Hope this helps. 🙂
