Looking to buy a printer for my Mom for Xmas...

She wants something fairly simple, just black and white (she already has a color printer to use for rare situations where she needs to do color prints) since she wants something that will be fairly inexpensive to replace cartridges and such. Suggestions as to reliable models?

Go with Canon....prints look great and the cheap ink cartridges are worth it alone. I've got a S750 printer, and I can get 2 sets of the refill kits (8 total - 2 black and 2 each of the 3 color cartridges) for $10.

Canon IP3000. The black cartridge yields many pages and is very inexpensive to replace--especially if you go the 3rd party route.

don't buy lexmark.

Their printers are dirt cheap but they try to kill you with cartridge prices.

*refer to posts above about Canon*

I'd go with a basic laser printer. Does HP make cheap ones>?

aha--see Griffinhart's post above mine 🙂

Thanks everyone, actually I was just looking around and decided a laser printer would probably be PERFECT.....I'll look into the one you suggested Griffinhart.

I'd have to agree, I picked up a business class samsung 2250 laser printer a little while ago, while it may be a bit much for normal home usersit's one of the best printers I've ever used. The toner lasts for about 5,000 pages and can be had for about $100
