Looking to buy a new laptop

I'm going to be starting my new job soon, and will be traveling quite a bit because of the job, so I want something light, but I also want something capable. I currently have a 15.4" widescreen laptop, but it's getting pretty old (got it when I began my university, around 4 years ago).

So, basically, I'm will to spend around 2,000 USD, which is approximately 15,000 HKD.

I'm not sure what I want from the specs, but I definitely want to be able to run a Linux distribution without too many issues, and I want a nice high-res screen. Also, I want it to include a remote control unit for media playback, and bluetooth module so that I may be able to use it.

So far, I've seen the Dell Studios, but they don't have something in a package that's smaller than 15", but it does look like a good package.

I am not sure what else to consider, but as soon as some suggestions do come up, I will point out what is missing.

How about the new HP dv4, its a 14.1". I recently purchased a HP dv5 with a 1680x1050 screen and it is a really nice screen. The build quality is also better than the dell studio series.

So, let me just confirm that you haven't messed up the numbering: you're suggesting that I go for a HP dv4, not a dv5? There's also a dv6 model, that's why I'm asking.

if ur still in the US, buy in the US. laptops in asia are a lot more expensive for the same spec.

If you are in China, you might get a much better deal on a Chinese notebook, i.e., Lenovo.

also lenovos usually work well with linux. fingerprint scanner support exists, but the implementation is iffy in some cases. ATI graphics drivers are good enough (i havnt had a problem with mine, anyway) and everything else should be simple with a good distro, i use ubuntu.

I'm not in the US anyways, I'm usually posting from somewhere in Europe.

What's a good Lenovo notebook that meets the above criteria? I really liked the dv4, but there was a dv5t, and a dv5z IIRC, and I'm not quite sure of the differences between the two. The nomenclature for the models is so damn confusing.

thinkpads.

the T and X series are the lightest, and im pretty sure the T400 will have more powerful options, the X series is lighter, pricier, and wont be as powerful for the money

i have a T60 and love the damn thing (this is after owning a T40 as well)

The ThinkPads that I want seem to be really expensive compared to the HPs. Especially with the higher resolution screen that I'm looking for.

I think I may be sticking to the 15" form factor since that's the keyboard that I'm used. I've tried using a 13" (widescreen, IIRC) laptop, and the keyboard on it wasn't that great.
