looking to buy a new full size truck... any advice?

Turbo, as in those engines that require premium gasoline that cost 10% more than regular gasoline? It completely eliminates the point of saving gas. Yay we burn 10% less gas..... but the gas is 10% more expensive so it's really about the same fuel cost as before 😵

Get a diesel. Diesel has about 40% more energy per unit of volume than gasoline, so they get awesome mileage all the time!

If by 40% more energy per unit volume you mean about 14% you'd be about right.

Also, the ecoboost in the F150 runs on regular gas, it doesn't require premium.
 
I love these new engines coming out. First I hear about hyundais 2.0t, then the mustangs v6, now these truck ecoboosts... Yummy.

In recent history, yes. The purchase price of the vehicle is typically more expensive as well.

I also believe that maintaining a diesel vehicle can be more pricey (a 6.0L powerstroke takes 15 qt of oil 😱) and your current mechanic may not be as familiar with it.

Diesels have their use but I don't believe that the OP is going to see much benefit.

Again with the making up of numbers. Diesel has 37.3 MJ/L vs Gasoline at 34.2 MJ/L (from wiki). Diesel has about 9% more energy per unit volume than gasoline.

yeah even if you dont go with the boosted engine, the "base model" v6 is the new 300hp model from the Mustang that gets 30mpg in that car, and the 5.0 v8 isnt a slouch either.

I laughed hard. Mainly because my friend's brother just bought one. I asked why he didn't get an STi or something and his answer was "I'm outdoorsy, I like to mountainbike and stuff." I then promptly asked if he bought the 4wd one. He didn't answer, just continued rummaging through the manual (he had just come back from the dealer). I left laughing.

While I'm not a fan of Toyota's current batch of trucks depending on what kind of "outdoorsy" stuff your friend wants to do a 2wd pickup may be fine. Just because you're driving down rutted dirt roads doesn't mean you'll need 4wd. If he just wants to haul crap around and drive down stuff that isn't too crazy he can do that just fine with 2wd. The extra clearance and taller tires on a pickup may be all he needs to do what he wants. 2wd trucks are cheaper and get better mileage so unless he actually need the capability of a 4wd it would be stupid to pay for it.

You missed the point. It wasn't that he needed 4wd (especially to do stuff like park in a park near a bike trail), it was that he didn't know and was so proud of his new truck.

You can't go wrong with a Chevy / GMC or the NEW fords.

I prefer GMC/Chevy myself but the new Ford motors sound real good.
Best thing to do is drive both and then if its not that big a differance go by price. If its a hugh differance then start there and work the other.

Aside from your travel trailer (which I assume your father has a truck to tow), my Subaru can do anything on your list. I can tow two snowmobiles and drive in practically any weather. It's (much) faster and more (barely) fuel efficient than a full size truck as well.

Not saying you shouldn't get a truck, but discounting station wagons purely because you don't like them is baseless and immature.

I've driven all of the Big Three's current pickups. In terms of handling and performance, I've gotta go with the Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.7L Hemi V8. I was actually surprised how smooth the ride was. Feels like it's on rails, which is unusual for a vehicle its size. It's got power to spare, always on demand. It's not bad on gas too. About the same as the Sierra.

Between the Sierra and the F-150, I'd go with the Sierra. Also good handling characteristics.
