Well I already PMed Fuzzybunny but apparently he's off. I need to get an order in tomorrow afternoon by the latest. I already have a Film SLR Nikon N75(yes i'm old school :p).

I still use that primarily when I want to compose good shots, landscapes etc. Plus I usually get my negatives converted/scanned to digital. But I need something less clunky and easier to carry on my own to just P&S with some advanced features to play with and of course good image quality.

I'm thinking about getting this camera I like the feature set, styling, size, etc.

I'd probably get it with one of these combos probably the cheaper of the two combos.

However I was also looking at this camera as well. More mega pixels aren't really what I'm looking at but more that it has more programmable setting with the shutter and aperture etc. And 10 dollars cheaper for 3 more mega pixels isnt too bad!

What do the resident ATOT photo junkies think?

EDIT: Pricewise I dont want to spend more than about 400 dollars.

Nice choices! Dunno much about cameras, but I'm pretty satisfied w/ my choices.

edit: suppose I'd post what my choice was, a Canon A530 - $150; casual photog, didn't need much more than that.

I'd go with the A710. It has Image Stabilization and makes it much easier to get a great shot. According to DCR links, just about everyone loved it: DCR Links

EDIT: I should add, this is what I'm getting when my work bonus comes in.

G7. great camera as long as you're not expecting a true-successor to the G6. basically, it's a top end A series (better feature set than any A series), with better glass and much better build quality (all metal body). it's a bit more pricey, but if you want something that can truly be a companion camera to your SLR there aren't too many better options.

That looks good. Canon does good P&S cameras. It has 7 megapixels (not too few, so you can make large prints; not too many, which would mean a lot of noise), uses AA batteries (get some rechargeable NiMH ones for maximum battery life, but alkaline will do in a pinch), uses SD cards (cheap, small, and ubiquitous), has image stabilization (so at least the backgrounds of your pictures will be sharp), and seems to have a fair amount of manual adjustments.

BTW, if you want to go the DSLR route, I would recommend the Nikon D50. You get maximum compatibility with your Nikkor lenses (D50 and higher has an AF screw drive, D40 does not), it can work as a P&S if you want to hand it to someone else to take pictures with, and is a decent camera overall (I have one, I'm liking it, and I've begun amassing my collection of Nikkor lenses).

But I dont have that kind of money at the moment. I have about 400 bucks from X-mas. And I dont wish to tap into my savings right now. If I was going to drop that much money I'd just buy a DSLR.

Well, if you're an SLR guy, you might consider a DSLR???

However, given the options you listed, (I'm a Canon guy so your choices are already both good to me) I'd say that there's a slight pickle.

#1.) Both cameras have MORE than enough pixels.

#2.) The A640 has the swivel LCD (I currently use an A610)

#3.) The A710 has the 6x Optical

If I *had* to choose between the two I'd take the 6x optical, but getting both would be nice!

Yea....I'm waffling between the extra MPs or the 6X zoom. Plus that IS is looking more and more sexy to me.

$398.94 Fedex second day.

Does anyone know of any coupons or promo codes for Newegg for it before I pull the trigger?
